Medical Description

Wysolone DT 20 Tablet is a higher-strength corticosteroid used for short, intensive courses to bring inflammation rapidly under control. It is commonly prescribed for asthma attacks, severe allergies, flares of rheumatic and inflammatory disease, and certain skin, kidney and blood disorders.

It contains prednisolone as a dispersible tablet, designed to be broken up in a small amount of water before swallowing. This suits children and anyone who finds tablets difficult, and gives a slightly more predictable absorption than a swallowed tablet.

Prednisolone enters cells and acts on DNA, switching off the genes producing inflammatory chemicals and switching on those that suppress them. At this strength the effect is substantial, and so are the metabolic consequences.

Raised blood sugar, increased appetite, fluid retention, restlessness and disturbed sleep are all common during a short burst and usually settle once it ends. Take the whole dose in the morning with food to limit stomach upset and sleep disruption.

Courses shorter than about three weeks can often be stopped directly, but anything longer, or repeated courses, must be tapered because the adrenal glands reduce their own output. Report any sign of infection promptly, as steroids mask them.

How does this medicine work?

  • Wysolone Dt 20 tablet contains prednisolone which is a man-made steroid. Steroids are hormones produced in the human body naturally that play an important role in maintaining normal physiological function and well being of the human body.
  • This medicine mimics the action of naturally produced steroids. It works by suppressing the immune response in allergies, inflammation, autoimmune diseases and during organ transplantation.

Interactions

Interactions with other drugs

Interactions with food items

  • Disperse Wysolone DT 20 Tablet in water and take it with or just after breakfast. Food matters more at this strength, as steroids irritate the stomach lining in proportion to the dose.
  • Watch sugar and refined carbohydrate closely during the course. Twenty milligrams of prednisolone raises blood glucose appreciably, and if you have diabetes you should test more frequently from the first day.
  • Reduce salt for the duration. Prednisolone causes fluid retention, and cutting pickles, papads, packaged snacks and processed food limits the swelling and rise in blood pressure.
  • Appetite typically increases within days. Planning meals and keeping snacks out of easy reach is more effective than trying to resist once the urge appears.
  • Include protein sources such as dal, eggs, fish, chicken and paneer, and calcium from milk, curd and paneer, particularly if you have repeated courses.
  • Limit alcohol, which adds to stomach irritation, sleep disturbance and raised blood sugar.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Wysolone DT 20 Tablet is a corticosteroid used at a higher strength for short, intensive courses. It is typically prescribed for asthma attacks, severe allergic reactions, flare-ups of rheumatic and inflammatory conditions, inflammatory bowel disease and certain skin, kidney and blood disorders, where inflammation must be brought under control quickly.
DT stands for dispersible tablet. It is designed to be dropped into a small amount of water, where it breaks up into a suspension that is then swallowed. This suits children, older people and anyone who finds tablets difficult, and it means the dose is absorbed a little more predictably. Drink the whole amount and rinse the glass.
Higher-strength prednisolone is usually given as a short burst, often three to seven days for an asthma attack or a flare, sometimes longer for other conditions. Short courses of up to about three weeks can often be stopped directly, while anything longer must be tapered.
The rule of thumb is duration rather than dose. If you have taken a steroid for more than about three weeks, or have had repeated short courses close together, your adrenal glands will have reduced their own output and the dose must be stepped down gradually. Your doctor will specify; never decide this yourself.
Twenty milligrams of prednisolone is a substantial anti-inflammatory dose, and steroids raise blood glucose in proportion. If you have diabetes you may need a temporary and sometimes large increase in your treatment for the duration of the course, and readings should come back down as the dose reduces.
Sleep disturbance and a wired, restless feeling are common at higher steroid doses and are among the most frequent complaints during a short burst. Taking the whole dose in the morning helps considerably. It settles once the course ends.
Yes, even a few days at this strength suppresses immune responses somewhat. Report fever, sore throat, cough or burning on passing urine, and avoid contact with chickenpox or measles if you have never had them. Live vaccines should not be given during or just after the course.
Appetite usually increases noticeably within days, and some fluid retention is common, so the scale may move. Most of this reverses after the course. Being deliberate about portions and salt during the burst limits it.
Yes, disperse it in water and take it with or just after breakfast. Steroids irritate the stomach lining, and at this strength that matters, particularly if you also take an anti-inflammatory painkiller.
For a genuine one-off short burst it is often not required, but if you have repeated courses, or any course longer than about three weeks, you should carry one. It tells doctors in an emergency that your adrenal response may be blunted and extra steroid may be needed.
Mention diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma or cataract, osteoporosis, stomach ulcer, tuberculosis or any current infection, epilepsy, thyroid disease, liver or kidney problems, and any mental health condition. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and list all your medicines.
Take it as soon as you remember on the same day. If you only remember the next day, take that day's dose as usual and do not double up. On a short intensive course, missing doses can allow the flare to rebound, so tell your doctor if you have missed more than one.
