Medical Description

Sefdin tablet is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections of the ears, throat, sinuses, lungs and skin. It contains cefdinir, a cephalosporin antibiotic that stops susceptible bacteria from building their protective cell wall. This causes the bacteria to die and helps clear the infection. Sefdin tablet is taken by mouth only on a doctor's prescription and does not work against viral illnesses such as most colds.

Uses

  • Ear infections: Cefdinir treats certain bacterial infections of the middle ear when a doctor has diagnosed an infection needing this medicine.
  • Throat and sinus infections: Cefdinir can clear susceptible bacteria affecting the throat, tonsils or sinuses after medical assessment confirms bacterial involvement.
  • Lung infections: Cefdinir treats selected bacterial infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia after medical assessment confirms bacterial involvement.
  • Skin infections: Cefdinir can treat bacterial infection in skin or nearby tissues, helping control redness, swelling or discharge after medical assessment.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, cefdinir, penicillin or another cephalosporin antibiotic, do not take it. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, a previous severe reaction to an antibiotic or severe antibiotic-related diarrhoea.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Cefdinir blocks the process bacteria use to build their protective cell wall. Without a stable cell wall, susceptible bacteria break down and die. It does not work against viruses that cause colds or most sore throats.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Sefdin tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention antacids, iron supplements or iron-containing products, and medicines used to treat gout. Antacids and iron can lower cefdinir absorption, while some gout medicines can increase cefdinir exposure, so the combination may need review.
