Medical Description

Omnacortil 10 Tablet is a prescription corticosteroid medicine used to manage a wide range of health conditions that involve inflammation, immune system overactivity, or allergic reactions. It is commonly prescribed for allergic conditions such as asthma, severe allergic rhinitis, and eczema, as well as for autoimmune and inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and certain skin conditions. It may also be used in kidney diseases such as nephrotic syndrome, in lung disorders like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and in various rheumatic and connective tissue diseases. In some cases, it is given alongside appropriate antimicrobial treatment for specific infections where inflammation needs to be controlled.

The active ingredient in Omnacortil 10 Tablet is prednisolone, a synthetic corticosteroid that mimics the action of natural hormones produced by the adrenal glands. Prednisolone works by suppressing overactive immune responses and reducing inflammation in affected tissues. This action helps relieve symptoms such as swelling, redness, itching, and pain, while also preventing damage caused by chronic inflammation. In transplant medicine, it plays an important role in preventing the immune system from rejecting a transplanted organ. In oncology, it may be part of treatment regimens for certain cancers, such as leukaemia and lymphoma, where immune suppression is beneficial.

Wysolone 10 tablet is another brand that contains prednisolone as its active component. Both Omnacortil and Wysolone work in the same way and are generally interchangeable when prescribed by a doctor. The choice between brands often depends on availability, patient tolerance, and prescribing preference. To achieve the best results, prednisolone should be taken exactly as prescribed, at the correct dose and time, and for the full duration advised by the doctor. Sudden discontinuation is not recommended, as it can lead to withdrawal symptoms, a flare-up of the underlying condition, or adrenal insufficiency due to the body’s reduced natural steroid production.

While taking prednisolone, it is important to follow certain precautions. Live vaccines should be avoided because the medicine can weaken the immune response, making the vaccine less effective and increasing the risk of infection. Patients should inform their healthcare provider about all other medicines they are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, and supplements, as prednisolone can interact with many medications, including those for diabetes, blood pressure, blood thinning, and fungal infections. Regular monitoring of blood sugar, blood pressure, weight, and bone health may be recommended during long-term therapy.

Prednisolone can cause side effects, especially when used for extended periods or at high doses. These may include increased appetite, weight gain, mood changes, higher susceptibility to infections, indigestion, and changes in skin appearance. Long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, cataracts, glaucoma, and hormonal imbalances. Therefore, patients should be closely supervised by their healthcare provider, and the lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest possible time. A healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, sufficient calcium and vitamin D intake, regular exercise, and stress management, can help reduce some of the potential risks associated with corticosteroid therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Omnacortil 10 Tablet is a corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation and calm an overactive immune system. It is prescribed in asthma and severe allergic reactions, rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatic conditions, inflammatory bowel disease, inflammatory skin and eye disorders, certain blood and kidney conditions, some cancers, and to replace hormone when the adrenal glands are underactive.
After more than a couple of weeks of treatment, your adrenal glands detect the extra hormone and reduce their own output. Stopping abruptly leaves the body without either source, which can cause severe weakness, vomiting, low blood pressure and collapse, a condition called adrenal crisis that can be fatal. The dose must be tapered.
Prednisolone is about four times more potent than hydrocortisone but considerably less potent than dexamethasone. It has moderate salt-retaining activity, so it causes more fluid retention and ankle swelling than dexamethasone, and it acts for an intermediate length of time, which suits once-daily morning dosing.
In the morning, with or just after food. Morning dosing matches your body's natural cortisol rhythm, which reduces the suppression of your own adrenal glands and causes less disturbance to sleep. Taking it with food reduces stomach irritation.
It often does, particularly with longer courses. Steroids increase appetite and redistribute fat towards the face, trunk and back of the neck, and prednisolone also causes the body to retain salt and water. Being deliberate about portions and salt from the start makes a real difference.
Steroids instruct the liver to produce more glucose and make muscle and fat cells less responsive to insulin. Blood sugar therefore rises, often substantially. If you have diabetes, monitor more closely and expect your treatment may need increasing; some people develop diabetes for the first time on steroids.
Yes. By suppressing the immune system it makes infections more likely and masks their usual signs, so a serious infection may cause little fever or pain until advanced. Report any fever, sore throat, cough or burning on passing urine promptly, and avoid contact with chickenpox and measles if you have not had them.
With prolonged use, yes. Steroids reduce calcium absorption and slow bone formation, thinning the bones and raising fracture risk. For longer courses your doctor may advise calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise and sometimes a bone-protecting medicine.
Yes, and this is often underestimated. Elation, irritability, restlessness, difficulty sleeping, anxiety and low mood are all recognised, and at higher doses more severe disturbance including confusion can occur. Tell your doctor about any marked mood change, and seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm.
Yes, for anything more than a short course. If you have an accident, serious illness or emergency surgery, your body cannot mount its own steroid response and doctors must know immediately so extra steroid can be given. Carry it at all times and show it to any doctor or dentist.
Mention diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, glaucoma or cataract, osteoporosis, stomach ulcer, tuberculosis or any current infection, epilepsy, thyroid disease, liver or kidney problems, and any mental health condition. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and list all your medicines.
Take it as soon as you remember on the same day. If you do not remember until the next day, take that day's dose as usual and do not double up. If you are taking this medicine as adrenal hormone replacement, contact your doctor, as missed doses can be dangerous.
