Medical Description

Nitroderm Tts 5mg is a transdermal patch containing nitroglycerin used to treat angina, a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart.

Uses

  • Treatment of Angina

Contraindications

  • Allergy to nitroglycerin or other related nitrates or excipients
  • Acute circulatory failure associated with marked hypotension
  • Myocardial insufficiency due to obstruction
  • Conditions associated with elevated intracranial pressure
  • Severe hypotension
  • Severe hypovolemia

Pregnancy

Breast Feeding

Due to limited information on the excretion of nitroglycerin in human breast milk, using Nitroderm patches should only be considered when the benefits to the mother outweigh the risk to the fetus.

Driving

Initial treatment with these patches may cause orthostatic hypotension or dizziness. Therefore, patients experiencing these symptoms should refrain from driving.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have arterial hypoxaemia
  • You are a patient with angina pectoris
  • You recently had acute heart failure or heart attack
  • You are taking other prescription, non-prescription medication, vitamins or minerals
  • You are allergic to nitroglycerin or other related nitrates or excipients

Directions for Use

  • Use these patches as advised by your doctor
  • Clean the area of application of the patch thoroughly, remove the protective liner of the patch
  • It is recommended that the patch is applied to the lateral chest wall, with a sticky side inwards, place the patch evenly onto the skin

Storage and disposal

  • Store below 30°C in a cool and dry place
  • Keep the medication away from the reach of children and pets
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the safe way of discarding the tablets

Dosage

Overdose

As this medication is a transdermal patch, cases of overdose are highly unlikely. If symptoms of low blood pressure or dizziness are observed, you should contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you forget to apply the patch, use it as soon as you remember. If the time of the following application is approaching, skip the dose. Do not apply two patches at once.

How Does It Work?

Nitroglycerin works by relaxing the blood vessels and smooth muscles, which reduces the cardiac load decreasing the oxygen demand, thus preventing chest pain.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Concomitant use of other vasodilators may potentiate the blood pressure-lowering effect of the Nitroderm Tts patch
  • Concomitant treatment with calcium antagonists, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, antihypertensives, tranquilisers and tricyclic antidepressants may potentiate the blood pressure-lowering effect of Nitroderm Tts patch
  • Concurrent administration of dihydroergotamine with a Nitroderm Tts patch may increase the bioavailability of dihydroergotamine
  • Co-administration with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines may reduce the therapeutic response of Nitroderm Tts patch
  • Co-administration with acetylsalicylic acid may potentiate the blood pressure-lowering effect of the Nitroderm Tts patch

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Skincare products should not be used before applying the patch as it may reduce the adhesiveness of the patch and interfere with the medicine.

You should not stop using these patches as they may bring back the pain, especially if you have been using them for several days. Talk to your doctor before stopping the medication.

You should not use two medications for the same condition as it may increase the risk of lowering the blood pressure to a greater extent.
