Medical Description

Metoprolol is an active ingredient in Met XL 12.5 tablet, an anti-hypertensive medicine, used to lower the raised blood pressure. It is used to treat high blood pressure and other heart-related conditions like angina (chest pain), heart failure and helps prevent complications. Metoprolol relaxes the blood vessels by reducing the load on the heart and decreased blood pressure. You must not abruptly stop taking the medicine as it leads to hypertensive crisis and heart failure. Avoid the use of the medicine for children below 18 years of age.

Uses

Met XL 12.5 tablet is used to treat high blood pressure mainly, along with certain heart conditions such as angina (chest pain) and heart failure.

Contraindications

  • If you are allergic to metoprolol or any other ingredient of Met XL 12.5 tablet.
  • If you have any heart conditions such as heart block or uncontrolled heart failure.
  • If you have asthma or any other lung condition.
  • If you have low blood pressure, diabetes.
  • If you have renal or liver disease.
  • If you have an electrolyte imbalance, acid-base imbalance.
  • If you have a decreased heart rate.
  • If you are on medication like verapamil, diltiazem, disopyramide (heart medicine).

Excess of Met XL 12.5 tablet may cause a decrease in heart rate, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, heart failure, decrease in blood sugar and oxygen levels, altered electrolyte levels and coma. If you have taken too much of this medicine then contact your doctor or visit your nearest hospital immediately.

Missed a Dose

Take a dose as soon as you remember that you have missed a dose. However, if you are close to the next dose, do not take the missed dose. Try to follow the Met XL 12.5 tablet dosage regimen regularly. Do not take an extra dose of the medicine to compensate for the missed dose.

  • Some medicine alters the effect of Met XL 12.5 tablet or Met XL itself reduces the effectiveness of other medicine.
  • It is used to treat diabetes like insulin may be increased with Met XL 12.5 medicine.
  • Medicines used to treat heart failure like digoxin may alter the effect.
  • Medicines used to treat heart conditions like verapamil, diltiazem, nifedipine causes a decrease in heart rate, low blood pressure when used along with the medicine.
  • Pain-killer medicines like diclofenac, indomethacin may decrease the effect of Met XL 12.5 tablet.
  • Rifampicin (anti-tubercular) decrease the effect of Met XL 12.5 tablet, whereas paroxetine, fluoxetine, sertraline (mood elevator), cimetidine (acid-lowering), hydralazine (anti-allergic), lidocaine (anaesthetic) increase the effect of the medicine.
  • Concurrent use of hormonal pills like oestrogen decreases the anti-hypertensive action of the medicine.
  • Concurrent use of medicines like aldesleukin (skin cancer), alprostadil (erectile dysfunction), clonazepam, diazepine (mood and sleep) increases the effect of Met XL 12.5 tablet.
  • Discuss with the doctor about the other medicine, herbal preparation and supplements you take to avoid possible interactions.
