K Gem tablet is a combination of metformin and gliclazide used to treat diabetes mellitus; the medication effectively reduces high blood sugar levels and is generally used in patients with Type 2 Diabetes. Common side effects include dizziness, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, hypoglycemia and tremors. If you observe any severe side effects, contact your doctor immediately or rush to the nearest hospital. How Does It Work?

Gliclazide mainly works by decreasing blood glucose levels by increasing insulin secretion and improving the peripheral resistance of insulin. It also increases insulin sensitivity and glucose clearance to lower blood sugar levels. In addition, metformin is given as an anti-hyperglycemic that acts by improving insulin's binding and peripheral tissue sensitivity.

Interactions with other medicines

  • K Gem tablet can interact with insulin and other anti-diabetic medication, resulting in a severe drop in blood sugar levels
  • This medication should not be prescribed with beta-blockers, antihistamines, or pain killers that can decrease the absorption of the K Gem tablet
  • When used with metformin, NSAIDs increase the risk of lactic acidosis
  • Verapamil and other OCT1 inhibitors may impair metformin effectiveness
  • Inducers of OCT1 such as rifampicin enhance gastrointestinal absorption and metformin efficacy
  • Miconazole improves the hypoglycemic impact of this tablet
  • Concomitant use of K gem tablet with fluoroquinolones may increase the risk of dysglycaemia
  • Salicylates, sulphonamides, etc,. may potentiate the hypoglycaemic effect of gliclazide
  • Calcium channel blockers, such as nifedipine, can sometimes affect glucose tolerance
