Medical Description
Intron A injection is a prescription biological medicine belonging to the interferon class. It is a synthetic form of a natural protein that helps regulate the immune system. It treats certain viral infections and cancers, including chronic hepatitis B and C, hairy cell leukaemia, malignant melanoma, follicular lymphoma, and HIV-associated Kaposi’s sarcoma, depending on the approved indication. It enhances immune responses, inhibits viral replication, and slows the growth of abnormal cells.
This medicine is supplied as a sterile solution or powder for injection, depending on the formulation, and is administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly as prescribed. When appropriate, a healthcare professional may teach patients or caregivers how to administer certain formulations at home.
Treatment is given on a regular schedule, which varies depending on the condition being treated. Regular medical monitoring, including blood counts, liver function, and thyroid function tests, may be required to monitor for adverse effects.
Uses
- Treatment of certain types of chronic hepatitis C and chronic hepatitis B in adult patients.
