Medical Description

Emetil Tablet is primarily used to treat schizophrenia, mania in bipolar disorder and other psychotic disorders like paranoia (abnormal and false beliefs). Schizophrenia is a type of psychotic disorder characterised by episodes of hallucinations, delusions, disordered thinking and behaviour. Emetil Tablet is also used for managing violent behaviour, agitation, nervousness, anxiety, and other behaviour problems. Emetil Tablet contains chlorpromazine which belongs to the class of antipsychotic medications. It blocks certain receptors in the nervous system, which improves behaviour and mood. Emetil tablets should be taken in dosage and duration as advised by your doctor. It is advised to complete the course of treatment.

  • If you have acute angle glaucoma, which increases the fluid pressure in the eyes.
  • If you have severe central nervous system depression (reduces the functionality of breathing).
  • If you have liver or kidney disease.
  • If you have respiratory issues.
  • If you’re pregnant and a lactating mother.
  • If you have prostate or bladder problems.

Directions for Use

  • Take the Emetil Tablet as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Take this medicine with or without food or as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Take this medicine on a regular schedule, preferably at the same time every day.
  • Swallow the whole tablet orally with a glass of water. Do not break/crush the tablet or chew this medicine.
  • Do not take this tablet with other medications as there is a chance of medicine interaction.
  • Don’t stop taking this medication suddenly, as it may lead to withdrawal side effects.
  • Don’t exceed the dosage, even if you cannot feel its effects.

Storage and disposal

Store Emetil Tablet at room temperature in a cool and dry area, away from sunlight. Keep the medication away from the reach of children and pet animals in a closed or locked cabin. Do not remove the medicine from its original packing. Do not flush Emetil Tablet down into the toilet. Do not throw away the medicines via household waste. Dispose of the expired medicine immediately. Do not use it after the expiry date, which is stated on the label.

Emetil Tablet overdose can result in symptoms like agitation, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, drooling, severe drowsiness, abdominal pain, fainting, vomiting, seizures, involuntary movement of the muscles, liver failure (yellow skin and eyes), loss of consciousness, etc. If you have these overdose symptoms, contact your doctor and seek emergency medical treatment from the nearby hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you’ve missed a dose of the Emetil Tablet, take it as you remember. If it's already time to take the next scheduled dose, then take the next scheduled dose. Do not double doses as it can cause overdose side effects. Talk to your doctor if you have any further queries regarding this issue.

How Does It Work?

Emetil Tablet contains chlorpromazine as an active ingredient. Chlorpromazine belongs to a typical antipsychotic class of medicine. It works by blocking dopamine receptors. This results in the decreased effect of dopamine (a natural chemical substance in the body). Dopamine is responsible for affecting the quality of thoughts and mood. It also reduces the effects of hallucination and delusions. Further, Emetil Tablet possesses properties that make it anti-emetic (prevents nausea and vomiting), antipruritic (prevents itching), anti-histamine (prevents allergic reaction), ganglion blocking activity (affects the heart) and analgesic (pain killer).

  • Interaction with tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics (pimozide, haloperidol), and antihistamines can lead to serious side effects.
  • Interaction with phenytoin and propranolol can increase the amount of both medicines in the body.
  • Interaction with opioid or narcotic pain relievers such as morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, tramadol, codeine can increase the side effects like drowsiness.
  • NSAIDs, Aspirin, and other medications which affect coagulation may interact and can increase the risk of bleeding.

  • You can continue with the regular diet as food doesn’t influence the effect of the Emetil Tablet.
