Clopixol Acuphase injection is a prescription medication primarily used to treat schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterised by episodes of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behaviour. The active ingredient in Clopixol Acuphase injection is Zuclopenthixol. The mode of action of Clopixol Acuphase injection is by blocking the receptor of a specific chemical messenger called dopamine, which improves mood, thoughts, and behaviour. This mechanism helps control psychotic illnesses. Clopixol Acuphase injection is generally given under the supervision of a healthcare provider and should not be self-administered at home. Clopixol Acuphase injection contains Zuclopenthixol as its main ingredient. Zuclopenthixol belongs to the typical antipsychotic class of medications. It works by blocking dopamine receptors that result in the decreased effect of dopamine, a natural chemical substance in the body. It helps control the positive (hallucination, delusions, disorganised speech, and thoughts) and negative symptoms (emotional coldness and low motivation) of schizophrenia.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Many medicines can interact with Clopixol Acuphase injection, making it less effective or increasing its side effects. Some examples are listed below:
  • Concomitant use of Clopixol Acuphase injection with other central nervous system (CNS) depressants (alprazolam, diazepam, and clonazepam) and other opioids (codeine and morphine) is strictly contraindicated. It may cause respiratory depression, coma, and even death.
  • Clopixol Acuphase injection should not be used concomitantly or within two weeks of using monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) like isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue, selegiline, rasagiline, etc. It is potentially life-threatening.
  • Clopixol Acuphase injection interaction with blood-pressure-lowering medicine, such as amlodipine, lisinopril, losartan, and metoprolol, can lead to extremely low blood pressure.
  • Clopixol Acuphase injection interaction with painkillers like morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, tramadol, and codeine may cause more sedation and drowsiness. Clopixol Acuphase injection interaction with anti-Parkinson’s medicines like levodopa may reduce the effects of levodopa.
  • Clopixol Acuphase injection interaction with antidepressants or mood-elevating medicines like fluoxetine and desipramine leads to increased blood levels of trifluoperazine and causes increased side effects.
  • Clopixol Acuphase injection interaction with antifungal medications like itraconazole and ketoconazole can reduce its effects.
