Medical Description

Ciplox-TZ tablet is an antibiotic medicine. It contains a combination of ciprofloxacin and tinidazole as active ingredients. It is used for the treatment of a wide range of infections caused by bacteria. It is effective for infection of the reproductive tract, tooth, urinary tract, lung, stomach, airways and abdominal infections such as acute diarrhoea or dysentery. It is used to prevent post-surgical infections. Ciplox-TZ tablet works by the combined action of its two ingredients and the growth of infection-causing bacteria. The dose, duration and frequency of taking Ciplox-TZ tablets are decided by your doctor. Always take the medicine as prescribed by the doctor for the prescribed duration. Do not stop taking the medicine even if you feel better, as incomplete treatment may result in treatment failure and the infection might reoccur.

Uses

Ciplox-TZ tablet is used to treat infection of the stomach, liver, tooth, pancreas, abdomen, vagina, cervix uterus, urinary tract, lung, throat and airways.
It is also used for the prevention of infection, which may happen after surgery and operation.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to ciprofloxacin, tinidazole, similar medicines or any ingredient of Ciplox-TZ tablet.
If you have serious blood disease or brain disorders.
If you have a history of serious allergic reactions including allergy of the skin due to any antibiotic.
If you are pregnant (especially during the first trimester) or breastfeeding.
If you are taking a medicine called tizanidine for muscle spasms.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Ciplox-TZ tablet must not be used during pregnancy as it may alter the growth and development of bones in the unborn baby. Thus, avoid it during pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Ciplox-TZ medicine may pass in breast milk and women should avoid breastfeeding the baby at least for three days after taking the last dose. Also, you must watch the baby for fungal infection of the mouth and diarrhoea while you are on the medicine.

Driving

The medicine may cause dizziness, giddiness, unusual muscle movements and impaired alertness thus avoid driving.

Alcohol

Avoid consuming alcohol during the treatment and at least three days after stopping the treatment. It may cause abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headaches and hot flushes may also occur.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if

You have liver and kidney diseases
You have watery diarrhoea and black tarry stools, immediately stop the medicine and inform the doctor.
You may experience blood disorder, anaemia and abnormal blood count.
You may experience irregular heartbeat and difficulty in passing urine.
You have diabetes, then the blood glucose may drop when you are on the medicine. You may experience pain, swelling in the joints or tendons, take a rest, stop the medicine and inform the doctor.
You may experience muscle pain and muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis).
You have a history of fits.
You may experience burning, tingling, numbness or pain sensations.

Directions for Use

Ciplox-TZ tablet should be taken 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals with a glass of water. Take it at a fixed time for optimal results. Do not consume it more than that prescribed by your doctor.

Storage and disposal

Store at a temperature below 25°C in a cool dry place.
Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms of Ciplox-TZ tablet include headache, tiredness, dizziness, hallucinations and fits. If you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor or reach out to the nearest hospital immediately.

Missed a Dose

It would be best if you never miss your dose of antibiotics as it may lead to treatment failure. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

Interactions

Interactions with other drugs

Effect

It is not safe to take Ciplox-TZ tablet with the blood thinner Warfarin, because both parts of Ciplox-TZ tablet can strengthen Warfarin and thin your blood too much. This raises the risk of serious bleeding.

Advice

Your INR needs closer checking and the Warfarin dose may be lowered during and after the course, so report bruising, black stools or bleeding gums. Also avoid all alcohol while taking Ciplox-TZ tablet and for 3 days after the last dose, as it can cause flushing, vomiting and a pounding heart.

Effect

It is not safe to take Ciplox-TZ tablet with the breathing medicine Theophylline, because the ciprofloxacin in Ciplox-TZ tablet can make Theophylline build up to high levels. This can trigger a fast heartbeat, vomiting or even seizures.

Advice

This pairing is usually avoided; if unavoidable, Theophylline levels must be checked and its dose lowered. Report nausea, a racing heart, tremor or any fit at once.

Effect

Taking Ciplox-TZ tablet with the epilepsy medicine Phenytoin can raise Phenytoin to higher levels in your body. This can cause drowsiness, unsteadiness, slurred speech and double vision.

Advice

Tell your doctor you take Phenytoin; its level may be checked during treatment. Report new drowsiness, wobbliness or double vision.

Effect

Taking Ciplox-TZ tablet with Lithium can make your body hold on to more Lithium, pushing its level up. Too much Lithium causes shakiness, vomiting, confusion and unsteadiness.

Advice

Your doctor may check your Lithium level during the course. Report tremor, vomiting, slurred speech or confusion straight away.

Effect

Taking Ciplox-TZ tablet with the painkiller Ibuprofen can raise the chance of overstimulating the brain, and rarely of a seizure, especially at high doses. People with a history of fits are most at risk.

Advice

If you have ever had seizures, tell your doctor before combining these. Choose paracetamol for pain where possible and report any twitching or fits.

Effect

Taking Ciplox-TZ tablet with the steroid Prednisolone can raise the risk of tendon pain and, rarely, a tendon tearing. Older adults and the Achilles tendon at the heel are most affected.

Advice

Report any new tendon or joint pain, swelling, or a snapping feeling, and rest the area. This risk is higher in older people and those who exercise hard.

Effect

Taking Ciplox-TZ tablet with the iron supplement Ferrous Fumarate can bind the ciprofloxacin in Ciplox-TZ tablet in the gut, so much less is absorbed. The antibiotic may then fail to treat your infection properly.

Advice

Separate your iron from Ciplox-TZ tablet by at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after. Let your doctor know if symptoms of the infection persist.

Effect

Taking Ciplox-TZ tablet with the calcium antacid Calcium Carbonate can stop the ciprofloxacin in Ciplox-TZ tablet being absorbed, as calcium binds it in the gut. The antibiotic may then be too weak to clear your infection.

Advice

Take Ciplox-TZ tablet at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after any calcium antacid. Tell your doctor if your infection is not settling.

Interactions with food items

Dairy products like milk or yoghurt and calcium-fortified juices should be avoided during the treatment. It may decrease the absorption of this medicine.
