Medical Description

Cedon P dry syrup is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It contains cefpodoxime, a cephalosporin antibiotic that kills bacteria, and lactic acid to support optimal absorption in children.

Uses

  • Bacterial ear infections
  • Bacterial throat infections
  • Bacterial lung infections
  • Sinus infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Bacterial skin infections

Contraindications

If your child is allergic to cefpodoxime, cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillin, or any ingredient in this medicine, do not give it. Some children with mild penicillin allergies may safely take this medicine, but always inform your doctor about your child's complete allergy history. Do not give this medicine for viral infections like the common cold or flu, as antibiotics do not work against viruses.

Side effects

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dyspepsia

Directions for Use

This medicine is a dry powder that must be reconstituted with water before giving. Shake the bottle vigorously to loosen the powder. Add the water provided with this pack up to the mark on the bottle and shake well to mix thoroughly. Use a measuring cup or dosing syringe to give the prescribed dose. Give this medicine with food or milk to help absorption and reduce stomach upset. Shake the bottle well before each dose to ensure the medicine is evenly distributed. Do not use the reconstituted solution after the expiry date written on the bottle.

Storage and disposal

Store the dry powder bottle at room temperature, between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, in a dry place away from direct heat, sunlight, and moisture. Once reconstituted, keep the bottle in the refrigerator and use within the expiry period marked on the label. Discard any unused reconstituted solution after that date.

Quick Tips

  • Complete the entire course of antibiotics even if your child feels better, as stopping early may cause the bacteria to multiply and become resistant
  • Give with food to avoid stomach upset
  • Encourage your child to drink plenty of water, especially if diarrhea develops
  • Always shake the reconstituted bottle well before each dose
  • Do not share this medicine with other children, as it is formulated specifically for your child's current weight and infection

Dosage

Overdose

If your child has taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you forget to give a dose, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your child's regular dosing schedule. Do not give a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Cefpodoxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic that works by preventing bacteria from building their protective cell wall. Without this essential outer shield, bacterial cells weaken, rupture, and die. The lactic acid component helps the child's body absorb the medicine more effectively.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Antacids and certain acid-reducing medicines can lower the effectiveness of this antibiotic. Inform your doctor about all medicines your child is taking. In rare cases, this medicine may cause Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, which may range from mild diarrhea to severe colitis. If severe or bloody diarrhea develops, contact your doctor immediately.

Interactions with food items

Food and milk enhance the absorption of this medicine. Give with a meal for best results.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Diarrhea can occur because this antibiotic may affect the helpful bacteria in the digestive system. Give with food and increase water intake. If diarrhea is severe or bloody, contact your doctor.
If your child vomits within 30 minutes of taking the medicine, you may need to give the same dose again. If more than 30 minutes have passed, wait until the next scheduled dose. Talk to your doctor for specific guidance.
Some children with mild penicillin allergies can safely take cephalosporin antibiotics, while others may have a cross-reaction. Always inform your doctor about your child's complete allergy history before starting.
