Medical Description

Affodapa SM ER tablet is a combination medicine used with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It contains dapagliflozin, metformin and sitagliptin, which lower blood sugar through different actions. The dapagliflozin component helps the kidneys remove extra sugar in urine, metformin reduces sugar made by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin, and sitagliptin helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is high. This extended-release tablet is taken by mouth and must be swallowed whole, not chewed, crushed or broken.

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Dapagliflozin helps the kidneys pass extra glucose out in urine. Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver and helps the body respond better to insulin. Sitagliptin increases natural signals that encourage insulin release after meals and reduce unnecessary glucose production. Together, these actions improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Affodapa SM ER works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, insulin and other blood sugar medicines can increase the risk of low blood sugar; water pills can increase fluid loss; medicines that affect kidney function or contrast dye used for scans may require special planning; and corticosteroids can raise blood sugar.

Interactions with food items

Alcohol may increase the risk of low blood sugar, dehydration and a serious metformin-related reaction. Avoid or limit alcohol only as your doctor advises, and do not delay or skip meals.
