Molecule Description

Rivaroxaban is a blood thinner that prevents the formation of blood clots.

Uses

  • This medicine is used to prevent the formation of blood clots due to a specific irregular heartbeat pattern, called atrial fibrillation or after hip or knee replacement surgery
  • It is also used to treat blood clots, such as in Pulmonary Embolus (PE) or Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Contraindications

When should one not use Rivaroxaban

  • You are allergic to Rivaroxaban
  • You have a stomach ulcer
  • You have injury or bleeding in the brain or recent surgery of the brain or eyes
  • You have a liver disease which may cause an increased risk of bleeding

Side effects

Common side effects of this drug are:

  • Anemia
  • Bleeding (gum bleeds, nose bleeds, black or tarry stool, blood in cough and vomit, increased menstrual bleeding, bleeding from an operation site)
  • Swelling or pain in the limbs
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea, constipation
  • Decreased in blood pressure (dizziness or fainting on standing)
  • Decreased in platelets
  • Fainting
  • Dry mouth
  • Allergic reaction

  • Problems in the eye (retinopathy)
  • Do not stop this medicine as your own as this can cause an increased risk of blood clots
  • If you are on this medicine and have a surgery coming up immediately inform your doctor

This medicine acts as a blood thinner. It stops the existing blood clots from increasing in size and also prevents the formation of new lumps in the blood.

This medicine has interactions with grapefruit juice. Avoid the consumption of grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

Dosage

Overdose

Overdose symptoms may cause excessive bleeding through any of the external orifices or internal bleeding in vital organs. This bleeding can be fatal. Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have had an overdose of this medicine.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose, take it as soon as you remember. If the time for next dose is close, skip the missed dose & do not take an extra dose of medicine to compensate for the missed dose.
