Ornidazole

Molecule Description

Ornidazole is used for the treatment and prevention of protozoal infections and other conditions like diarrhea, dysentery and pelvic inflammatory diseases (inflammation of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and pelvic area caused by an infection).

Uses of Ornidazole

  • Treatment of protozoal infections such as giardiasis, trichomoniasis, etc.
  • Treatment of Crohn’s disease (when infection co-exists)
  • To treat diarrhea, dysentery (amoebiasis), pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Prevention of infections after surgery

Contraindications of Ornidazole

When should one not use Ornidazole

Allergic reaction to Ornidazole or other medicine belonging to the same family e.g. Metronidazole.

Side effects of Ornidazole

Common side effects of this drug are:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Poor coordination
  • Skin reactions
  • Taste disturbances

Precautions and Warnings of Ornidazole

Pregnancy

Can I take Ornidazole during pregnancy?
A:
Your doctor will prescribe this medicine to you only if the benefit to you exceeds the potential risk to the fetus. Please consult your doctor.

Breast Feeding

Q:
Can I take Ornidazole while breastfeeding?
A:
It is not known whether it passes into the mother’s milk. Hence, it is better to inform your doctor before starting this treatment if you are breastfeeding.

Driving

Q:
Can I drive if I have consumed Ornidazole?
A:
Avoid driving when you take Ornidazole as it may cause dizziness.

Alcohol

Q:
Can I consume alcohol with Ornidazole?
A:
Avoid alcohol consumption if you are taking Ornidazole. It may cause symptoms such as flushing, increased heartbeat, nausea, thirst, chest pain and low blood pressure with alcohol (Disulfiram reactions).

Mode of Action of Ornidazole

How Does It Work?

Ornidazole inhibits the growth of protozoa by interacting with the DNA of the micro-organism and inhibiting the protein synthesis, thereby leading to death of the micro-organism.

Interactions with other medicines

Blood-thinning agents like Warfarin and muscle relaxants.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interactions are observed.

Dosage of Ornidazole

Overdose

Overdose of this medicine leads to confusion, dizziness, impairment of consciousness, fits/ convulsions, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. Seek immediately for medical help if you have taken more medicines.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it time for the next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose.
