- Severe pain in the stomach or lower back with nausea, vomiting, swelling pancreas (pancreatitis)
- Swelling hip, face, tongue, difficulty breathing
- Low blood sugar, confusion, mood change (hypoglycaemia)
- Weight gain
- Level of lipase in the blood increased
- Inflamed nose or throat (nasopharyngitis)
- Cough

It is unknown if Linagliptin is harmful to the unborn child. Therefore, it is preferable to avoid using this medicine during pregnancy.
Breast Feeding

It is unknown if Linagliptin can pass into breast milk. Consult with the doctor. He/ she will tell you if you can continue this medicine or not during breastfeeding.
Driving

Can I drive if I have consumed Linagliptin?
A:
Linagliptin does not influence the ability to drive. But if this medicine is taken along with other diabetic medicine or injection, it may cause a fall in sugar level (hypoglycemia) and affect your ability to drive. Hence doctor consultation might be recommended before driving.

Do not drink alcohol as it can affect the control of sugar level.

Mode of Action of Linagliptin
How Does It Work?
Linagliptin inhibits the enzyme called Dipeptidyl Peptidase (DPP)-4, thereby prevents the breakdown of GLP-1 and GIP (Glucose-Dependant Insulinotropic Polypeptide). By preventing the failure, medicine prolongs the action of GLP-1 and GIP which stimulates the release of insulin from beta cells in the pancreas and it also decreases the release of glucagon from pancreatic alpha cells. These effects together increase the amount of insulin in a glucose-dependent manner and reduce the glucose production in the liver....

Interactions with other medicines
Some medicines and Linagliptin interfere with each other and these include antibiotics like Rifampicin, medicine used to control fits or seizures like Phenytoin.

Take medicine as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to the regular dosing schedule. Do not use extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose....
