Gabapentin+Nortriptyline is a combination medicine. It is used for the treatment of neuropathic pain. It is a condition of an abnormal painful sensation in different body parts due to damage in a part of the brain responsible for sensing the external stimuli. Both the medicines work effectively in reducing neuropathic pain. Gabapentin relieves pain arising due to nerve damage, compression in nerves and nortriptyline acts on the central nervous system and offers relief from neuropathic pain. Gabapentin+Nortriptyline is available in the form of a tablet. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or are breastfeeding and about all the medicines and supplements you take and all the conditions or diseases you suffer from, before starting this medicine.

Contraindications

When should one not use Gabapentin+Nortriptyline

If you are allergic to gabapentin, nortriptyline or similar medicines.
If you have experienced a recent heart attack, blockage in the heart, the disturbed rhythm of the heart.
If you are taking certain medicines (MAO Inhibitors) for some psychiatric disorders.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Gabapentin+Nortriptyline should be avoided during pregnancy unless considered essential by the doctor.

Breast Feeding

Consult your doctor before using pregabalin+nortriptyline while breastfeeding as limited study has been done on its safety.

Driving

Avoid driving if you feel dizzy or sleepy after taking gabapentin+nortriptyline.

Alcohol

Avoid consuming alcohol with gabapentin+nortriptyline, as it may worsen the side effects.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if

You have problems with your heart, liver, kidney, pancreas.
You notice any changes in mood and behaviour or have suicidal thoughts, immediately contact your doctor.
You are taking medicine for psychiatric disorders.
You have difficulty in breathing or other respiratory illness.
You experience abnormal symptoms after taking gabapentin+nortriptyline.
You are scheduled for surgery or dental procedure involving local or general anaesthesia
You are above or 65 years of age.
Wear full clothes and apply sunscreen when stepping into bright sunlight as the medicine may make you sensitive to the sun.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Gabapentin acts on your brain and reduces the release of chemicals responsible for the sensation of pain. It also relieves the pain arising due to nerve damage.
Nortriptyline also acts on your central nervous system and offers relief from neuropathic pain (pain due to nerve damage).

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Gabapentin+Nortriptyline works and this medicine itself can affect the action of certain medicines when taken together. Tell the doctor about the medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid possible interaction.
Concomitant use along with medicines for psychiatric disorders such as moclobemide, phenelzine, iproniazid, isocarboxazid, nialamide, or selegiline (used to treat Parkinson's disease) may lead to serious side effects (serotonin syndrome).
Concomitant use with medicines for cough and cold containing ephedrine, isoprenaline, noradrenaline, phenylephrine, and phenylpropanolamine may increase the side effects of drowsiness.
You should also tell the doctor if you take or have recently taken medicine that may affect the heart's rhythm.
Water pills as furosemide medicines to treat irregular heartbeats like quinidine and sotalol should be used cautiously.
