Azelaic Acid
Description
Azelaic acid has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-keratinizing effect
s. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis in skin bacteria (C. acnes), reducing the body's inflammatory response by scavenging free radicals, and normalizing the skin's cell turnover process to prevent pore blockage. It is primarily used as a topical treatment. Its main therapeutic uses are treating mild-to-moderate Acne Vulgaris and the redness, bumps, and pustules associated with Rosacea. It is also used as against hyperpigmentation (like melasma) because it inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, which is key to melanin production. Azelaic acid is commonly available in topical creams, gels, and foam formulations, typically in concentrations of 15% or 20%.
