Medical Description

Utodin injection is used in hospital care during pregnancy to temporarily reduce contractions when labour starts too early. It contains ritodrine, a beta stimulant that relaxes the muscle of the uterus. By reducing the strength and frequency of uterine contractions, it may give the obstetric team time to assess the pregnancy and provide further care. A doctor or nurse gives Utodin injection into a vein or muscle in a hospital or clinic, with monitoring of the pregnant person and baby.

Uses

  • Premature labour: Labour that begins before the baby is ready may need short-term slowing, allowing the care team time to assess the mother and baby and arrange treatment.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not receive it. Do not receive Utodin injection if you have uncontrolled diabetes or if your obstetric team says delaying delivery is unsafe. Tell your doctor before treatment if you have heart disease, irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid, bleeding or a severe infection.

Side effects

  • Fast heartbeat or palpitations: The active ingredient ritodrine can stimulate the heart as well as the uterus, causing a pounding or racing sensation. Tell the medical team promptly if severe or persistent.
  • Tremor or nervousness: Stimulation of beta signals may cause shaky hands, restlessness or nervous feelings during treatment. Report worsening symptoms while you are being monitored.
  • Headache: Changes in blood vessel activity can cause head pain during or after the injection. Tell the nurse if it is severe, sudden or linked with vision changes.
  • Nausea or vomiting: Ritodrine can upset the stomach, and vomiting may cause dehydration during treatment. Tell the medical team if you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Breathing difficulty: Heart strain or fluid in the lungs can cause breathlessness during treatment. Get emergency medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain or fainting.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Utodin injection is used during pregnancy only when an obstetrician decides that temporarily delaying premature labour is appropriate. The mother and baby need close monitoring during treatment.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding after delivery. Information about ritodrine during breastfeeding is limited, so follow medical advice about feeding after treatment.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive after receiving Utodin injection until your doctor confirms that you are alert and medically fit. Headache, tremor or a fast heartbeat may make driving unsafe.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It may be given into a vein or muscle as decided by the obstetric team. Your pulse, blood pressure, blood sugar and the baby's condition may be monitored during treatment.

Storage and disposal

Utodin injection will be stored and handled by the hospital or clinic. Do not store or use an injection at home unless a healthcare professional specifically provides it for that purpose.

Quick Tips

  • Remain under hospital observation while receiving Utodin injection.
  • Tell the obstetric team about diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease or any previous irregular heartbeat.
  • Report chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or a very fast or irregular heartbeat immediately.
  • Tell the team about every medicine, vitamin and supplement used during pregnancy.

Dosage

Overdose

An excessive amount may cause very fast heartbeats, palpitations, irregular heartbeats, low blood pressure, nervousness, tremor, nausea or vomiting in the mother or baby. The medical team will manage any suspected excess promptly. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The active ingredient ritodrine stimulates beta signals in uterine muscle, relaxing it and lowering the strength and frequency of contractions so premature labour may be delayed briefly.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Utodin works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, beta-blockers may reduce its effect, while other beta stimulants and medicines that affect heart rhythm may increase fast heartbeat. Corticosteroids or water tablets may increase low potassium and heart risks, and diabetes medicines may need closer monitoring because ritodrine can raise blood sugar.
