Uses
- As per CDSCO, Stalopam 5 mg tablet is used for:
- Managing the symptoms of major depressive disorders (persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in life)
- Treatment of panic disorders (type of an anxiety disorder), with or without agoraphobia (fear of open and crowded places)
Contraindications
- Do not take Stalopam 5 mg tablets, or take with caution:
- If you are allergic to any of the components of the Stalopam 5 mg tablet.
- If you are using other antidepressant medications; combined with this medicine, it can cause exaggerated side effects.
- If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
- If you are breastfeeding.
- If you have a history of addictive tendencies; this medicine may cause psychological dependency.
- If you are already using other anti-anxiety medicines or sedatives; they can interfere with the functioning of this medicine and cause adverse reactions.
- If you have angle-closure glaucoma.
- If you have liver disease.
- If you are a child under 12; this medicine is not meant for children unless advised by the doctor.

- You have suicidal thoughts after taking Stalopam 5 mg tablets.
- You experience any changes in your sexual desires after taking Stalopam 5mg tablets.
- You are a child below 18; there are not enough studies on this medicine’s safety for children. However, doctors might prescribe it if the benefits outweigh the risks.
- You are using Ayurvedic or herbal medicines or supplements; some can cause serious side effects with this medicine.
- You are using medications like painkillers that cause sedation or tranquillisation.
- You are an older adult over 65 years; the effects of this medicine are exaggerated in aged persons and must be used with caution.
- You have a seizure disorder and are on anti-epileptic medicines.
- You are planning to have surgery or a dental procedure.
- You have recently had a heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, respiratory disease, or lung disease.
- You have kidney disorders; while this tablet can be safe, consult a doctor as the side effects are increased in end-stage kidney failure.
- You have or had a liver condition; this medicine may need some dose adjustment.
Directions for Use
- Take the Stalopam 5 mg tablet in the exact dosage and at the same time every day.
- Do not exceed the dosage, even if you cannot feel its effects.
- Take this tablet whole with a glass of water.
- Do not chew or break this tablet.
- To avoid medicine interactions, do not use Stalopam 5 mg tablets with other medications without informing your doctor.
- Do not discontinue this medication abruptly, as it causes unwanted withdrawal effects.

Interactions with other medicines
- Take caution if you use other anti-anxiety and mood disorder medications such as linezolid, moclobemide, selegiline, etc. These, in combination with Stalopam 5 mg tablets, can cause severe reactions.
- Using aspirin with this medicine can increase bleeding.
- If you have bleeding issues or are on a blood thinner, Stalopam 5 mg tablets can increase bleeding.
- Do not take other medicines that cause drowsiness, such as medicines for allergy (cetirizine), cold and cough (diphenhydramine), opiates or narcotic pain relievers (codeine and tramadol) with Stalopam 5 mg tablets. This can increase the side effects and cause extreme drowsiness.
- If you are using anti-epileptic medicines for seizure disorders, inform your doctor as they can increase the side effects of Stalopam 5 mg tablets.
- If you are using other antidepressant medicines, do not use a Stalopam 5 mg tablet without informing your doctor, as it can cause severe reactions.
Interactions with food items
- Avoid grapefruit and its juice, as this fruit can worsen the side effects of Stalopam 5 mg tablets.
- Products containing caffeine as well as chocolates and desserts can cause an increase in serotonin, leading to serotonin toxicity and cause severe side effects.
- You can take Stalopam 5 mg tablets before or after food.
