Medical Description
Sprot syrup is used to treat certain intestinal infections caused by amoebas or giardia, including amoebic diarrhoea, dysentery and liver abscess. It contains a combination of metronidazole and diloxanide. The metronidazole component damages the genetic material of susceptible organisms, while the diloxanide component acts in the large intestine to clear amoebas that may remain after symptoms improve. Sprot syrup is given by mouth, usually with food when directed, and should be used under medical supervision. It may be prescribed for children when a clinician selects it.
