Rabesec 20 Tablet
Description
Rabesec tablet is used to manage and treat conditions related to excessive stomach acid. It's active ingredient is rabeprazole, which belongs to a class of medicine known as "Proton Pump Inhibitors" (PPIs). It works by blocking the activity of "proton pumps" located in the stomach wall. These pumps are responsible for the final step of acid production. By inhibiting them, Rabesec reduces the total amount of acid produced in the stomach, thereby providing relief from symptoms such as heartburn and acidity. This action also heals stomach and intestinal ulcers, as well as inflammation and erosion of the food pipe caused by acid reflux. The tablet is formulated as a gastro-resistant tablet, meaning it is designed to withstand stomach acid and release the medication in the intestine for optimal absorption.
Rabesec is primarily prescribed for conditions like Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), which causes heartburn and chest pain, and for the treatment of stomach and intestinal ulcers. It is also effective in managing Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition where a tumour leads to increased gastric acid production. It is recommended to take the tablet on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning, about 30 minutes before the first meal. This timing allows the medication to regulate stomach acid throughout the day.
Long-term use of Rabesec, particularly in high doses, requires medical supervision. It has been associated with a decrease in the absorption of vitamin B12 from the stomach, which can lead to a deficiency. Symptoms of B12 deficiency may include pale skin, a sore tongue, weakness, and vision disturbances. Prolonged use can affect bone health, increasing the risk of fractures, especially in older patients. For this reason, older individuals should be particularly cautious and consult with their doctor regarding the duration and dosage of the treatment.
For individuals taking Rabesec, making certain lifestyle adjustments can significantly help in managing their condition. It is advisable to avoid alcohol, smoking, and excessive consumption of caffeinated beverages, citrus juices, and spicy, oily, or fast foods. Eating late at night or just before bedtime should also be avoided, as this can exacerbate acid reflux. Patients should not stop taking the medication on their own, especially if they have ulcers, as the full course of treatment may take several months to achieve complete healing. Rabesec is generally not recommended for use in children.
