Medical Description

Podowart Paint is a topical medicine used to remove certain skin warts. It contains a combination of podophyllotoxin, benzoic acid and aloe vera extract. The active ingredient podophyllotoxin stops wart cells from multiplying and destroys the affected tissue, while aloe vera extract helps maintain moisture on treated skin; benzoic acid is also part of the formulation. As the treated wart clears, healthier skin can grow in its place. Podowart Paint is applied only to the affected skin for external use, under medical advice, and must be kept away from healthy skin.

Uses

  • Skin warts: Podowart Paint destroys wart tissue and helps the affected area clear as healthier skin grows during treatment.
  • Dryness around treated skin: Aloe vera may soothe and moisturise the area around a treated wart, helping reduce tightness or discomfort as the skin recovers.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Podowart Paint. Do not apply it to moles, birthmarks, irritated, swollen, bleeding or broken skin, or to a wart with hair growing from it. Do not use it on a wart that has recently undergone surgery. It must not be used on large areas because too much may enter the body.

Side effects

  • Burning: A burning feeling can occur as podophyllotoxin and benzoic acid act on the wart. Wash it off only at the advised time, and contact your doctor if pain is severe.
  • Redness: The treated skin may look red because the paint irritates the area. Keep it away from surrounding healthy skin and contact your doctor if redness spreads.
  • Itching: Itching may occur while the wart and nearby skin react to treatment. Stop the application and seek medical advice if intense itching comes with swelling or blisters.
  • Skin irritation: Soreness, peeling or tenderness can develop at the application site during treatment. Do not apply extra paint to speed up wart removal.

If you miss an application, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one. Do not apply extra product to make up for it.

How does this medicine work?

The main active ingredient, podophyllotoxin, stops wart cells from dividing and gradually destroys the wart tissue so it can clear. The benzoic acid component is also part of the formulation. The aloe vera extract forms a protective moisturising layer that helps reduce dryness while the treated area heals.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Podowart Paint works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell your doctor about other medicines applied to the skin, because combining treatments on the same area may increase irritation or absorption.
