Medical Description

Pirox IM injection is used for short-term relief of severe pain and swelling from joint and muscle conditions, including painful arthritis, gout attacks and other acute pain when oral treatment is unsuitable. It contains piroxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine, with benzyl alcohol and alcohol as formulation ingredients. Piroxicam lowers the production of natural substances that cause pain, heat and inflammation. This injection is given into a muscle by a doctor or nurse, not self-administered, and is used only for the period advised by the prescriber.

Uses

  • Osteoarthritis: Wear-related joint changes can cause ongoing pain, swelling and stiffness; this injection helps ease these symptoms and support movement.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Immune-related joint inflammation can cause warmth, swelling and pain; this injection helps reduce these symptoms and improve comfort.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis: Inflammation around the spine and larger joints can cause stiffness and pain; this injection helps relieve symptoms and support flexibility.
  • Acute gout attack: A sudden gout flare can cause intense joint pain, redness and swelling; this injection helps provide short-term relief during the attack.
  • Moderate to severe acute pain: Sudden intense pain may need injectable relief when oral medicines are not suitable; this injection helps reduce pain for short-term care.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, do not use Pirox injection. Do not use it if you have an active stomach ulcer or bleeding, or if a pain medicine has previously caused an allergic breathing reaction. Tell your doctor before use if you have heart, kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure, asthma triggered by pain medicines, or a history of stomach problems. Do not use it during the later part of pregnancy. Earlier in pregnancy, use it only if your doctor specifically advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use Pirox injection during the later part of pregnancy. Earlier in pregnancy, use it only if your doctor advises it, because it may harm the unborn baby and cause pregnancy complications.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Use only if your doctor decides it is suitable for you and your baby.

Driving

Driving

Pirox injection may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol because it may worsen dizziness and increase the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It is given into a muscle, not into a vein. The healthcare professional will check the liquid before administration.

Storage and disposal

Store the injection as directed on the pack, protected from heat and direct light. A healthcare facility should dispose of unused or opened injection material safely.

Quick Tips

  • Report a history of ulcers, bleeding, asthma or heart, kidney or liver problems before the injection.
  • Avoid alcohol and do not drive if dizziness or unusual sleepiness occurs.
  • Seek urgent help for black stools, vomiting blood, facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
  • Pirox injection should not be combined with another painkiller of the same anti-inflammatory group unless prescribed.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much piroxicam can cause severe stomach pain, vomiting, drowsiness, bleeding or kidney problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Piroxicam lowers the production of prostaglandins, natural substances that contribute to pain, heat and swelling. This reduces inflammation and eases painful stiffness. Benzyl alcohol and alcohol are formulation ingredients and are not described as providing a separate treatment effect. Because the medicine is injected into a muscle, it is absorbed into the bloodstream by the healthcare professional.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Pirox injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, blood thinners such as warfarin can increase bleeding; aspirin, other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines and ketorolac can further increase ulcer and bleeding risk; water pills and blood pressure medicines may work less well and raise the risk of kidney problems; lithium levels can rise and cause toxicity; and cidofovir can increase kidney risk. Do not combine these medicines unless your doctor approves.

Interactions with food items

Alcohol can worsen dizziness and increase the risk of stomach ulcers or bleeding with Pirox injection. Avoid alcohol unless your doctor advises otherwise.
