Piroxicam stops the synthesis of prostaglandins which helps to reduce pain and inflammation.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Piroxicam may increase the effects of warfarin
  • Piroxicam with acetylsalicylic acid reduces piroxicam concentrations in the blood
  • Piroxicam and glycosides may worsen heart failure
  • Piroxicam with cyclosporin, tacrolimus may cause damage to kidneys
  • Cimetidine and piroxicam causes increased absorption of piroxicam
  • Piroxicam and corticosteroids increase the risk of stomach bleeding
  • Piroxicam may reduce the efficacy of diuretics and other anti-hypertensive medicines
  • Piroxicam and lithium medications may increase the levels of lithium
  • Piroxicam and mifepristone could cause termination of pregnancy
  • Piroxicam and quinolones can cause increased risk of convulsions
  • Piroxicam can reduce excretion of methotrexate, leading to toxicity

  • Patients with risk of gastrointestinal bleeding should be monitored while on Piroxicam therapy
  • Patients with uncontrolled blood pressure, heart failure, heart disease, should be treated with caution
