Medical Description

Oxil DT tablet is an antibiotic used for susceptible bacterial infections of the throat, ears, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It contains cefadroxil, a cephalosporin antibiotic that stops bacteria from making the protective cell wall they need to survive. Oxil tablet is a dispersible tablet given by mouth, including to young children when prescribed, and it is dispersed in water immediately before use. Use it only for the diagnosed infection and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve.

Uses

  • Bacterial throat and ear infections: This medicine helps clear susceptible bacterial infections affecting the throat or ears, including infections that can cause soreness or discharge.
  • Urinary tract infections: Cefadroxil helps treat susceptible bacterial infections of the urinary system when selected by a doctor for the diagnosed condition.
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections: This medicine helps control bacterial infections affecting skin or tissues beneath it, including infected wounds when diagnosed by a doctor.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, or have had a serious allergy to cefadroxil, another cephalosporin or a penicillin medicine, do not use Oxil tablet. Tell the doctor before use if you have kidney disease or have previously developed severe diarrhoea after an antibiotic.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Cefadroxil can cause queasiness after use, especially while the stomach adjusts; give it with food if advised and seek advice if it prevents fluids.
  • Vomiting: Stomach irritation may cause vomiting after the tablet is given; contact the doctor if vomiting continues or prevents the prescribed treatment.

  • Headache: Some children may develop head pain while using cefadroxil; contact the doctor if it is severe, unusual or does not settle.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Use cefadroxil only when the doctor considers it appropriate.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Cefadroxil can pass into breast milk, so watch the baby for diarrhoea, thrush or an unusual rash and report these signs.

Driving

Driving

This medicine is not usually expected to affect alertness, but avoid driving if dizziness or another symptom affects you.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific alcohol interaction is established, but avoid alcohol if it worsens stomach upset or makes you feel unwell.

Directions for Use

Disperse Oxil tablet in a glass of boiled and cooled water immediately before use, then give it by mouth as advised. It may be given with or without food; food may help if stomach upset occurs. Do not chew or use the tablet dry. Complete the prescribed course and do not save the medicine for another illness.

Storage and disposal

Store Oxil tablet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it in its original pack and out of children's reach. Do not use medicine that is damaged or past its expiry date. Ask a pharmacist how to dispose of unused medicine.

Quick Tips

  • Give Oxil tablet only for the bacterial infection diagnosed by the doctor.
  • Disperse the tablet in water immediately before giving it.
  • Offer suitable fluids if loose stools occur, unless the doctor has restricted fluids.
  • Do not use Oxil tablet for a common cold or flu, which are usually caused by viruses.
  • Seek emergency medical help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a severe skin reaction.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, skin eruptions, breathing difficulty or other allergic symptoms. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Cefadroxil attaches to bacterial cells and prevents them from building their protective cell wall. Without this wall, the bacteria weaken and die, allowing the infection to settle.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Oxil works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention purified Vi polysaccharide typhoid vaccine, oral typhoid vaccine, inactivated cholera vaccine and medicines that affect kidney function. Cefadroxil may reduce the response to some oral vaccines, so the doctor should decide the appropriate vaccination plan.

Interactions with food items

Oxil tablet may be given with or without food. Giving it with food may ease stomach upset without preventing cefadroxil from working.
