Medical Description

Nugen eye drop is a combination eye medicine used for certain bacterial eye infections and associated surface redness or congestion. It contains ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic that interferes with bacterial growth, and phenylephrine, which narrows enlarged surface blood vessels. Ciprofloxacin helps clear susceptible bacteria while phenylephrine can reduce some eye redness and congestion. Nugen eye drop is placed into the affected eye and should be used exactly as advised by an eye doctor.

Uses

  • Bacterial eye infection: Ciprofloxacin helps clear susceptible bacteria causing infection of the eye and may prevent the condition from continuing or worsening.
  • Eye redness and congestion: Phenylephrine narrows enlarged surface blood vessels, which may temporarily ease redness and congestion associated with the treated eye condition.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Tell your doctor before use if you have glaucoma, high blood pressure, heart disease, an irregular heartbeat, thyroid disease, diabetes, or a previous serious reaction to ciprofloxacin or related antibiotics. Do not use contact lenses while the eye infection is active unless your eye doctor says they are suitable.

Side effects

  • Eye redness: Ocular hyperemia means increased redness of the eye, which may occur even while the infection is settling. Contact the eye doctor if redness or swelling worsens.
  • Taste change: A bitter or unusual taste can occur when some drops drain into the throat through the tear duct. Tell your doctor if it is troublesome.
  • Nausea or diarrhoea: Some liquid may drain into the throat and upset the stomach or loosen stools. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

How does this medicine work?

Ciprofloxacin interferes with the genetic material that susceptible bacteria need to grow and repair themselves, helping clear the infection. Phenylephrine acts locally on surface blood vessels and narrows them, which can reduce redness and congestion. The two ingredients have separate roles in the combination.

Some medicines can affect the way Nugen eye drop works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention other eye drops, medicines for high blood pressure or heart rhythm, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, antidepressants, stimulant medicines and other quinolone medicines.
