Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
- Cefixime is an antibiotic that inhibits the formation of bacterial cell walls resulting in bacterial death.
- Sulbactam irreversibly inhibits a chemical substance produced by bacterial cells which break down cefixime and thereby allows cefixime to attack and kill the bacteria. It reduces resistance and enhances the activity of cefixime against bacteria.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Concurrent use of probenecid with sulbactam decreases the clearance of sulbactam, which may result in increased and prolonged levels of sulbactam in the blood.
- When cefixime is used concomitantly in patients receiving coumarin-type anticoagulants such as warfarin may enhance the effects of the anticoagulants, prolong clotting time and can cause bleeding.
- Alcohol or medicines containing alcohol as a component along with cefixime or other cephalosporins can cause adverse effects like sweating, headache, increased heartbeats, redness of the skin.
- Discuss with your doctor about any other medicines, herbal preparations and supplements you are taking currently to avoid any possible drug interactions.
