Medical Description

Microspan NS injection is used for short-term fluid replacement when blood volume has fallen after surgery, injury or burns. It contains dextran, a large carbohydrate molecule that remains in the bloodstream and draws water into the circulation, helping expand blood volume for a limited period. This temporary expansion can support blood flow and blood pressure while the underlying problem is managed. The injection is given into a muscle or slowly into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, with monitoring during treatment.

Uses

  • Short-term fluid replacement: Helps temporarily restore circulating volume when fluid loss after surgery, injury or burns has reduced blood volume.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not receive it. It may be unsuitable if you have kidney disease or kidney failure, liver disease, a disorder of iron handling or excess iron in the blood, a condition in which red blood cells break down too quickly, severe heart failure, very low platelet levels or a bleeding disorder. Tell the doctor before treatment if any of these apply.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Safety during pregnancy has not been established. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Receive Microspan NS injection only when the doctor decides it is necessary.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

It is not clear whether dextran passes into breast milk. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Receive Microspan NS injection during breastfeeding only when prescribed after individual assessment.

Driving

Driving

Dizziness or changes in blood pressure may affect alertness after treatment. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how you feel and the healthcare team says it is safe.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It may be injected deep into a muscle or given slowly into a vein, as decided by the healthcare professional. The healthcare team will monitor your blood pressure, breathing and response.

Storage and disposal

Keep the unopened injection in its original container, protected from direct sunlight and according to the pack instructions. Unused injection materials, syringes and needles must be placed in an approved sharps container by healthcare staff. Keep them away from children and pets.

Quick Tips

  • Tell the healthcare team about kidney, heart, liver or bleeding problems before treatment.
  • Report previous reactions to dextran or similar fluid-replacement injections.
  • Tell the nurse promptly about breathing difficulty, rash, swelling, severe dizziness or seizures.
  • Avoid driving or operating machinery until the healthcare team confirms that you are alert and well enough.
  • Keep follow-up examinations and monitoring appointments arranged by your doctor.

Dosage

Overdose

An excessive amount is unlikely because Microspan NS injection is given by trained healthcare staff, but too much may overload the circulation or cause breathing difficulty. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

Microspan NS injection is given by healthcare staff according to a planned treatment schedule. If a hospital or clinic appointment is missed, contact the treating team for instructions. Do not arrange an extra injection yourself. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Dextran is a large molecule that remains in the bloodstream and attracts water into the circulation. This increases circulating volume for a short time, which can support blood pressure and blood flow. The temporary effect helps the healthcare team manage low blood volume while the cause is treated.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Microspan NS injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, enoxaparin, apixaban and prasugrel may increase the risk of bleeding when used with dextran; other blood-thinning or antiplatelet medicines may have the same effect.
