Medical Description

Lonopin Pen is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) containing Enoxaparin as its active ingredient. It belongs to a class of medicines known as low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWH) and is used to prevent and treat harmful blood clots in the body. Blood clots can block blood vessels and reduce blood supply to vital organs such as the heart, lungs, or brain, leading to serious complications.

Lonopin Pen is commonly prescribed in conditions such as unstable angina (chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and for preventing clot formation after certain surgeries. It may also be recommended for patients who are bedridden for prolonged periods, as immobility increases the risk of clot formation. The dose and duration are decided by the doctor based on body weight, kidney function, and overall health condition.

Enoxaparin works by inhibiting specific clotting factors in the blood, especially Factor Xa, thereby reducing the blood’s ability to form clots. It does not dissolve existing clots but prevents them from growing larger and stops new clots from forming. This action helps lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other clot-related complications.

Lonopin Pen is a prefilled injection device designed for subcutaneous (under the skin) administration. It may be given by a healthcare professional, and in some cases, patients or caregivers may be trained to administer it at home. Before starting this medicine, inform your doctor about any bleeding disorders, recent surgery, stroke, high blood pressure, kidney or liver problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or if you are taking other blood thinners or painkillers.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Lonopin Pen contains Enoxaparin, which works as an anticoagulant (blood thinner). It enhances the activity of a natural substance in the body called antithrombin III, which helps block certain clotting factors, mainly Factor Xa and, to a lesser extent, Factor IIa (thrombin). By inhibiting these clotting factors, it reduces the formation of fibrin, a protein essential for blood clot development. As a result, Lonopin Pen prevents the formation of new blood clots and stops existing clots from getting bigger. However, it does not dissolve clots that have already formed. This action helps reduce the risk of serious complications such as heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Lonopin pen may interact with other medicines, discuss with your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbal preparations you are taking. Also, you should inform your doctor if you have a planned surgery or vaccination scheduled.
  • Certain medicines such as other blood thinners, pain killers if taken along can increase the risk of bleeding thus, should be discontinued before initiating treatment with the Lonopin.

Interactions with food items

There is no known interaction with food. However, please inform your doctor if you encounter any food interaction with natural blood thinners like ginger, garlic and ginkgo.
