Medical Description

Lecof P syrup is a combination medicine used to relieve common cold symptoms, including a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, watery eyes, cough, pain and fever. It contains chlorpheniramine maleate, dextromethorphan hydrobromide, paracetamol and phenylephrine, which ease nasal and eye symptoms, reduce dry cough, lower fever and pain, and reduce nasal swelling. Together, the ingredients relieve symptoms rather than remove the virus causing a cold. Lecof P syrup is taken by mouth after shaking the bottle and measuring the liquid with the supplied device.

Uses

  • Common cold: Runny nose, blocked nose, sneezing and watery eyes can accompany a cold; the chlorpheniramine component eases these symptoms while phenylephrine reduces nasal swelling.
  • Dry cough: Dextromethorphan reduces the urge to cough when a cold causes a dry, irritating cough, but it does not remove the infection.
  • Fever and body aches: The paracetamol component lowers fever and eases headache or body pain that may occur with a cold.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not take Lecof P syrup. Do not use it with monoamine oxidase inhibitor medicines or soon after stopping them. Tell your doctor before use if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, liver disease, asthma or thyroid disease.

Side effects

  • Sleepiness: Chlorpheniramine can slow alertness and reaction time; avoid driving and ask for help if drowsiness is unusually strong or does not settle.
  • Nausea: The combination may irritate the stomach, especially without food; contact your doctor if nausea becomes severe or stops you drinking.
  • Vomiting: This syrup may trigger vomiting or worsen fluid loss; seek medical help if repeated vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down.
  • Upset stomach: Paracetamol and the other ingredients may cause abdominal discomfort; take food only as advised and contact your doctor if pain becomes severe.
  • Headache or allergic reaction: Phenylephrine may cause head pressure, while rash or allergy may occur with any ingredient; get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Ask your doctor before using Lecof P syrup during pregnancy. The combination should be used only when the expected benefit is considered greater than possible risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Ask your doctor before using Lecof P syrup while breastfeeding. Chlorpheniramine and dextromethorphan may affect the baby or milk supply in some circumstances.

Driving

Driving

Lecof P syrup may cause sleepiness, dizziness or blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery if these effects occur.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Do not drink alcohol while using Lecof P syrup because it can increase sleepiness and impaired alertness.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring cup provided and take Lecof P syrup by mouth. Do not drink directly from the bottle. It may be taken with or without food, but food may reduce stomach upset. Follow the prescribed directions and do not extend treatment without medical advice. Do not combine it with another cold medicine or paracetamol-containing product unless your doctor approves.

Storage and disposal

Store Lecof P syrup in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children. Dispose of unused syrup according to local medicine-waste guidance.

Quick Tips

  • Use the measuring cup provided rather than a kitchen spoon.
  • Check other cold, cough or fever products so you do not duplicate ingredients.
  • Rest, drink warm fluids and wash your hands often to reduce the spread of a cold.
  • Avoid driving if you feel sleepy, dizzy or less alert.
  • Contact your doctor if symptoms do not improve within a week, or if breathing becomes difficult.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The chlorpheniramine component reduces the effects of histamine, a substance involved in sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. Dextromethorphan reduces cough signals in the brain and helps calm a dry cough. Paracetamol lowers fever and eases pain. Phenylephrine reduces swelling of blood vessels inside the nose, helping relieve blockage. This combination treats cold symptoms but does not remove the virus causing the illness.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Lecof P works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention medicines for low mood that affect serotonin, monoamine oxidase inhibitor medicines, sedatives, sleeping medicines, opioid pain medicines, blood pressure medicines, other cold products and any medicine containing paracetamol. Some of these may increase sleepiness, alter blood pressure or duplicate ingredients.

Interactions with food items

Avoid alcohol because chlorpheniramine and dextromethorphan may increase sleepiness and impaired alertness when combined with alcohol.
