Medical Description

Idromet Tablet contains ibandronic acid as its active ingredient, which belongs to a class of medicines called bisphosphonates. It is used to treat weak bones (osteoporosis) in women after menopause. After menopause, a woman's body undergoes some hormonal changes which make their bones weak and susceptible to fractures if not taken care of. Idromet Tablet is given orally as a tablet on an empty stomach at least 60 mins before eating or drinking anything other than plain water, as prescribed by the doctor. Make sure you understand how to take this medicine from your doctor or pharmacist before you start treatment. Common side effects include low calcium levels, stomach pain, nausea, indigestion (dyspepsia), weakness, back pain, among others.

Contraindications

  • If you have a known allergy to ibandronic acid.
  • If your blood calcium levels are low (Hypocalcemia).
  • If you have any abnormalities in the food pipe, difficulty in swallowing.
  • If you have trouble standing or sitting upright for at least one hour after taking the dose.

  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing, new-onset or worsening heartburn, or chest pain after taking this medicine (possible irritation of the food pipe)
  • Severe bone, joint, or muscle pain
  • Signs of a severe allergic reaction: hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, wheezing, or sudden difficulty breathing
  • Muscle spasms, twitching, or numbness/tingling around the mouth or in the fingers and toes (possible very low blood calcium)

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have trouble sitting upright for 1 hour.
  • You have any problem with swallowing.
  • You experience pain in the abdomen or severe heartburn after taking this medicine.
  • You have kidney disease.
  • You have poor oral hygiene, any ongoing or scheduled dental treatment or unhealed wound in the mouth.
  • You notice pain or swelling in your jaws.
  • You are taking steroid medicines like prednisolone, dexamethasone or betamethasone.
  • You have or had cancer.
  • Tell your doctor about your complete medical history and ongoing medications.

Directions for Use

  • Take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Idromet Tablet should be taken the first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, with a full glass of water.
  • Do not eat or drink anything (except water) for at least 1 hour (or the duration mentioned by your doctor) after consuming this medicine.
  • Do not lie down, recline or bend forward but sit upright for at least 1 hour after consuming this medicine.
  • Take Idromet Tablet on the same date each month, as advised by your doctor. Do not take two tablets within the same week.

Storage and disposal

  • Store it in a cool and dry place.
  • Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.

If you happen to consume an excess dose of this medicine, you will experience symptoms like heartburn, stomach ache, nausea and discomfort. Contact your doctor or the nearest hospital immediately.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a dose, do not take it at any time of day. You may take it the next morning and continue the dosing schedule accordingly.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Do not take Idromet Tablet along with calcium, iron, aluminium or magnesium supplements or antacids as these may interfere with its absorption. Take these medicines at least 60 mins apart.
  • Medicines like aspirin, diclofenac, ibuprofen (NSAIDs) should be avoided or used with caution along with Idromet Tablet as they may worsen or increase the level of gastric discomfort and irritation.
