This medication works by lowering blood glucose levels, but it should be combined with a healthy diet and exercise plan.

  • Glimepiride lowers the blood sugar level and increases the release of insulin from the pancreas.
  • Insulin passes sugar (glucose) from the blood into the cells.
  • Metformin decreases the absorption in the intestine and the production of sugar in the liver.
  • Both of these components increases the insulin sensitivity of the body (which allows the cells of the body to use blood glucose more effectively, reducing blood sugar).
