Geton 0.5 mg contains colchicine as the active ingredient which is used both as curative as well as preventive (during initial therapy with allopurinol and certain uricosuric medications) in the trea

tment of acute gout. Colchicine is preferred to provide relief from inflammatory symptoms in case of Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF).

Uses of Geton 0.5 MG

Acute gout flares
Familial Mediterranean fever (genetic disorder leading to recurrent fevers and painful inflammation in chest, abdomen and joints)
Amyloidosis (abnormal deposition of amyloid protein in heart, kidney or certain vital organs)

Contraindications of Geton 0.5 MG

Severe liver impairment
Cardiac insufficiency
Blood disorders (like anemia or cancer)
Patients with kidney failure / undergoing dialysis

Abdominal cramps

Nausea and vomiting
Decreased WBC as well as platelets

Pregnancy

Can I take Geton 0.5 mg during pregnancy?

Geton 0.5 mg is strictly not allowed in pregnant ladies since colchicine is believed to be fatal to foetus. So if you're on this medicine, proper contraceptive course has to be followed to avoid unwanted pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Can I take Geton 0.5 mg while breastfeeding?

Colchicine is believed to be excreted through breastmilk and is not suitable for the baby at all. Thus, a feeding mother must consult her physician clearly if she is taking the medicine.

Driving

Can I drive if I have consumed Geton 0.5 mg?

Geton 0.5 mg doesn't cause any drowsiness and you can drive without any issue.

Alcohol

Can I consume alcohol with Geton 0.5 mg?

Alcohol is strictly not advisable when you are on colchicine therapy as alcohol may interfere with its excretion and increase its amount in body, thus leading to toxicity.

Colchicine should be taken only when prescribed by the doctor and in quantities suggested. Do not crush, chew or break the tablet. Swallow it whole with water as per doctor recommended schedule.

Interactions with other medicines

Colchicine must be avoided with erythromycin, verapamil, disulphiram, ketoconazole as these medications increase the amount of colchicine in the body
Colchicine along with statins, fibrates, ciclosporin or digoxin increases the risk of myopathy
Medicines such as cimetidine and tolbutamide reduce the metabolism of colchicine leading to rise in the levels of colchicine which may lead to toxicity
