Uses
- Acute gout flares
- Familial Mediterranean fever (genetic disorder leading to recurrent fevers and painful inflammation in chest, abdomen and joints)
- Amyloidosis (abnormal deposition of amyloid protein in heart, kidney or certain vital organs)
Contraindications
- Severe liver impairment
- Cardiac insufficiency
- Blood disorders (like anemia or cancer)
- Patients with kidney failure / undergoing dialysis

Overdose
- Since colchicine is found to be potentially toxic in overdose, immediate consult with a doctor is advised. Monitor blood pressure and keep a close check on respiration to avoid shock.

Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Colchicine must be avoided with erythromycin, verapamil, disulphiram, ketoconazole as these medications increase the amount of colchicine in the body
- Colchicine along with statins, fibrates, ciclosporin or digoxin increases the risk of myopathy
- Medicines such as cimetidine and tolbutamide reduce the metabolism of colchicine leading to rise in the levels of colchicine which may lead to toxicity
