Medical Description

Gdsafe dry suspension is an antibiotic used for selected serious bacterial infections, including certain infections of the stomach and intestines when other treatment is unsuitable. Its active ingredient is colistin, which kills susceptible bacteria by damaging their protective outer membrane and allowing essential contents to leak out. Colistin may also reduce the effect of some harmful substances made by bacteria. Gdsafe dry suspension is mixed as directed, shaken well, measured with the supplied device and given by mouth only under medical supervision, including for children when prescribed.

Uses

  • Severe bacterial infections: Colistin may treat selected serious infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to it when other treatment is unsuitable.
  • Stomach and intestinal infections: Gdsafe dry suspension may be prescribed for certain bacterial infections affecting the gut, including in children when a doctor advises it.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Tell your doctor before use if you have kidney disease, muscle weakness, nerve problems or a breathing disorder, because colistin can worsen kidney, nerve or muscle effects. Use it only for a bacterial infection diagnosed or considered likely by a doctor.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Colistin can irritate the digestive tract and cause queasiness after administration; seek advice if nausea prevents you from keeping fluids down.
  • Vomiting: The suspension may upset the stomach and trigger vomiting; contact the treating doctor if it continues or the prescribed medicine cannot be retained.
  • Diarrhoea: Changes in intestinal bacteria may loosen stools; seek medical help for severe diarrhoea, blood in stools or signs of dehydration.
  • Tingling or weakness: Colistin can affect nerves or muscles, causing pins and needles or unusual weakness; report this promptly, especially if breathing feels difficult.
  • Reduced urination: Colistin may affect kidney function and lower urine output; contact your doctor urgently if this occurs or swelling develops.

Directions for Use

Reconstitute Gdsafe dry suspension only as directed on the pack or by your doctor, using the sterile water supplied with the pack or boiled, cooled water only if instructed. Shake until the mixture is uniform. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack and do not drink directly from the bottle. Give Gdsafe dry suspension by mouth exactly as prescribed. Continue for the full period advised, even if the infection improves, unless your doctor tells you to stop.

Storage and disposal

Before mixing, store Gdsafe dry suspension as directed on the pack, away from heat and moisture. After preparation, follow the pack instructions for storage and disposal. Keep it tightly closed and out of children's reach. Do not use it after the stated period or expiry date.

Quick Tips

  • Use only the measuring device supplied with the pack.
  • Give the complete prescribed course even if the infection improves.
  • Watch for reduced urination, unusual weakness, tingling or breathing difficulty.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much colistin may cause vomiting, severe weakness, tingling, reduced urination, breathing difficulty or other serious effects. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Colistin attaches to the outer membrane of susceptible bacteria and disrupts its structure. The membrane becomes leaky, causing essential contents to escape and killing the bacteria. This action may also reduce harmful substances released by some bacteria.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Gdsafe dry suspension works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell your doctor if you use capreomycin, vancomycin, amikacin, gentamicin, kanamycin or other medicines that can affect the kidneys, nerves or muscles. These combinations may increase the risk of kidney problems, weakness, tingling or breathing difficulty.
