Folvite Tablet

• Folvite tablet is used to treat and prevent folic acid deficiency anaemia, which is characterised by weakness, fatigue, difficulty breathing, headache, irritability, and difficulty concentration.
• As a supplement to prevent nutritional deficiency during pregnancy, breastfeeding after surgery or in conditions of nutritional malabsorption.
• Treatment of megaloblastic anaemia caused by folate deficiency, in which the red blood cells are fewer and larger than normal.
• Prevention of neural tube defects such as spina bifida in the developing baby, for women planning a pregnancy and through early pregnancy.
• Folate replacement in conditions with an increased requirement or increased loss, such as chronic haemolytic anaemia, sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, long-term alcohol use and dialysis.
• Given alongside methotrexate, on a schedule set by the doctor, to reduce the side effects of methotrexate treatment.
• Folate supplementation in people taking long-term medicines that lower folate levels, including some anti-epileptic medicines, sulfasalazine and trimethoprim.

Other General Warnings

• You have a medical condition or a family history of medical conditions.
• You are on other medications, supplements or following other complementary or integrative health approaches.
• You should not take Folvite 5mg tablet if you are allergic to the component of the supplement.
• If you have planned surgery or an operation, you may be asked to stop taking the products at least 2-3 weeks before the procedure.
• Supplements are intended to supplement people's diets and should not substitute for a well-balanced, varied diet and healthy lifestyle.

• Take Folvite 5 tablet as advised by the doctor.
• Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, at the same time each day so that it is easier to remember.
• Preferably, take it an hour before the meal; avoid taking tea or coffee along with the supplement.
• Folvite 5mg tablet may be taken with or without food. It is absorbed slightly better on an empty stomach, but if it upsets your stomach, take it after a meal instead.
• Keep a gap of about two hours between Folvite 5mg tablet and sulfasalazine, which reduces the absorption of folate from the gut.
• If you take methotrexate, take Folvite 5mg tablet only on the days your doctor specifies, which are usually not the same day as your methotrexate dose. Never start it yourself during methotrexate treatment.
• Do not start or stop Folvite 5mg tablet on your own if you take an anti-epileptic medicine such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine or valproate. Tell your doctor, as your medicine levels may need checking.
• If you are planning a pregnancy, begin Folvite 5mg tablet before you conceive and continue as advised, because the baby's brain and spinal cord form in the first few weeks.
• Stop consuming dietary supplements more than the state daily dose.

• Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

• Folvite 5mg is a higher-strength folic acid tablet than the amount found in an everyday prenatal multivitamin. Take it only for as long as your doctor advises, and do not assume it can be swapped for your routine supplement.
• Tell your doctor before starting if you take methotrexate, have a seizure disorder, or have been told you have a folate-dependent tumour.
• Include folate-rich foods such as spinach, methi, beans, peas, citrus fruit, nuts and fortified cereals. Avoid overcooking vegetables, as folate is lost in heat and cooking water.
• Report any rash, itching, swelling or breathlessness after a dose to your doctor. Allergy to folic acid is uncommon but can occur.
