Medical Description

Flavedon MR tablet is used as an add-on therapy for managing symptoms of angina pectoris, a condition characterised by radiating chest pain due to decreased oxygen and blood supply to the heart. It contains trimetazidine as its active ingredient that belongs to the class of medicines acting on the heart. Trimetazidine present in the Flavedon MR tablet is a metabolic antianginal agent that works by preventing a drop in cellular energy and ensures the proper functioning of the heart cells. Flavedon MR does not help reduce the attacks of angina and only helps relieve symptoms of it. This tablet should be taken as directed by the doctor and in doses and duration as prescribed. Some common side effects of Flavedon MR are headache, diarrhoea, stomach pain, weakness, rash. Most of which are temporary, but if you feel the side effects persist, you should contact your doctor immediately. Before using the Flavedon MR tablet, inform the doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding and about your detailed medical history.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Flavedon MR Tablet is used as an add-on treatment for stable angina in adults whose chest pain is not adequately controlled by, or who cannot tolerate, first-line antianginal medicines. It is taken regularly to reduce the frequency of attacks, not to stop an attack once it has begun.
Most angina treatments work by reducing the heart's workload, slowing the heart rate or widening blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure. Trimetazidine does none of these. It changes the fuel the heart muscle burns, so it protects the heart without affecting heart rate or blood pressure at all. This is why it can be added to other treatments.
No. It works gradually over weeks and has no effect on an attack in progress. Always keep the fast-acting nitrate your doctor prescribed, usually a tablet or spray used under the tongue, for immediate relief.
Trimetazidine can cause or worsen movement disorders. Tremor, muscle stiffness, slowness of movement, an unsteady walk and restless legs have all been reported, particularly in older people. These are usually reversible when the medicine is stopped, but they must be reported promptly and the medicine discontinued.
Because trimetazidine blocks dopamine receptors to a small degree, it can worsen the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and related conditions. For the same reason it must not be used in people with parkinsonian symptoms, tremors, restless leg syndrome or other movement disorders.
The effect builds gradually and your doctor will usually review whether it is working after about three months. If there has been no clear benefit by then, the medicine is normally stopped rather than continued indefinitely.
No, and that is its main practical advantage. Because it works on the heart's metabolism rather than on circulation, it does not cause the low blood pressure or slow heart rate that limit the dose of other antianginal medicines, so it can be added when those are already at their maximum.
MR stands for modified release. The tablet releases trimetazidine slowly and evenly through the day, which keeps the level in your body steady and allows twice daily dosing. Swallow it whole; crushing it destroys this control.
Yes, considerably. Trimetazidine is cleared by the kidneys, so it accumulates when kidney function is reduced. It must not be used in severe kidney impairment, and the dose is usually lowered in moderate impairment, particularly in older people.
Do not stop on your own. Your doctor will decide, and will also review whether the medicine is still needed. If movement problems develop, however, it should be stopped and your doctor informed promptly.
Mention Parkinson's disease, any tremor, restless legs or other movement disorder, kidney disease, and your age, since older people are more susceptible to side effects. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and list all your other medicines.
Take it as soon as you remember with food, unless your next dose is nearly due, in which case skip it. Do not take a double dose. Because the benefit builds over time, occasional missed doses matter less than with fast-acting angina medicines.
