Uses
- As per CDSCO, Escipra tablet is used for the following:
- Treatment of major depressive disorder
- Treatment of generalised anxiety disorder
- Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Treatment of panic disorder
Contraindications
- Escipra tablet is contraindicated in the following cases:
- If you are allergic to any of the components of the Escipra tablet, i.e. Escitalopram
- If you take Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) like Selegiline, Rasagiline and antipsychotic medicine-pimozide
- If you use other anti-anxiety or sedative medications
- If you have acute angle glaucoma, which increases the fluid pressure in the eyes
- If you have liver or kidney disease
- If you have respiratory issues
- If you have a heart condition
- If you are pregnant and a lactating mother
Side effects
- The side effects of Escipra tablets include the following:
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Confusion
- Drowsiness
- Increased sweating
- Insomnia (difficulty in sleeping)
- Sexual dysfunction

- You have any allergic reactions after taking Escipra tablet.
- You experience any self-harming thoughts or suicidal ideation.
- You notice a sudden decrease or loss of vision.
- You experience any severe side effects persistently.
- You have trouble breathing or talking.
- You have a history of mild or severe liver and kidney disease, this medicine may need a dose adjustment.
- You are pregnant or planning a pregnancy during the course of this medicine.
- You are using any ayurvedic/herbal medicines, vitamins, and other health supplements.
Directions for Use
- Take the Escipra tablet as prescribed by the physician.
- Take the medicine with or without food or as prescribed by the doctor.
- Take Escipra tablet on a regular schedule, preferably at the same time every day to maintain it constant level in the body.
- Take the whole tablet orally with a glass of water. Do not break or chew this medicine.
- Do not take Escipra tablet with other medications without consulting your doctor.
- Do not stop taking Escipra tablet suddenly, as it may lead to withdrawal side effects.
- Do not exceed the dosage on your own, even if you cannot feel its effects.

How Does It Work?
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Tell your physician about your prescription medications, herbal products, vitamins and nutritional supplements, you are taking or plan to take as there is a chance of medicine interaction. Many medicines can interact with Escipra tablet making it less effective or increasing side effects. This includes the following:
- MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) like Selegiline, Rasagiline, Isocarboxazid, and other antidepressants, lithium, triptans, buspirone, amphetamines, tramadol, tryptophan, is strictly contraindicated with Escipra tablet as it may cause serotonin syndrome.
- Escipra tablet interaction with metoprolol can lead to excessive bradycardia (slow heart rate).
- Escipra tablet interaction with tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics (pimozide, haloperidol), and antihistamines can prolong QT interval.
- Escipra tablet interaction with NSAIDs, Aspirin, and other medications which affect coagulation may increase the risk of bleeding and bruising.
- Escipra tablet may also interact with Herbal supplements like St. John’s wort and can lead to severe side effects.
Interactions with food items
- You should avoid consuming Escipra tablet with cola drinks, caffeine-containing food items and chocolates as it can result in serotonin syndrome (high levels of serotonin).
