Medical Description

Doxovent 400mg Tablet is used for the regular control of wheezing, breathlessness and chest tightness in bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It contains doxofylline, a xanthine bronchodilator that relaxes the muscle of the airways and the blood vessels within the lungs so air moves more easily.

Doxofylline belongs to the same family as theophylline but has little effect on adenosine receptors, which is why it generally causes fewer heart rhythm disturbances, less stomach upset and less restlessness. It is taken regularly to keep symptoms controlled and is not a rescue medicine for a sudden attack.

Take it with or just after food to reduce stomach discomfort, at the same times each day, exactly as prescribed. Do not stop without medical advice, and continue any preventer inhaler you have been given.

Nausea, upper abdominal burning, headache, difficulty sleeping and palpitations occur because xanthines stimulate the stomach, brain and heart. Seek prompt medical advice if you develop persistent vomiting, a racing or irregular heartbeat, severe agitation or confusion, as these can indicate the level in your body is too high.

Before starting, tell your doctor about heart disease, low blood pressure, an overactive thyroid, stomach ulcer, epilepsy, or kidney or liver disease, and if you are pregnant. This medicine is not recommended while breastfeeding. Tell your doctor if you start or stop smoking, as this changes how quickly it is cleared.

Doxolin tablet, Duphill tablet, Doxocip tablet, Doxofyl tablet and Doxoford tablet are a few other medications with doxofylline as their active ingredient.

  • Take the tablet with or just after food to reduce nausea and burning in the upper abdomen.
  • Take your doses at the same times each day to keep a steady level in the body.
  • Keep coffee, tea, cola and energy drinks moderate, since caffeine adds to tremor, restlessness and palpitations.

Dosage

Overdose

Overdose of Doxovent tablet may lead to low blood pressure and unconsciousness. Seek medical attention in case you have consumed too much of this medicine.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of Doxovent tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

  • Doxovent 400mg Tablet contains doxofylline, a xanthine bronchodilator. It inhibits enzymes called phosphodiesterases inside airway smooth muscle cells, which allows cyclic AMP to accumulate. Rising cyclic AMP causes the muscle fibres to relax.
  • As that muscle relaxes, the narrowed airways widen and resistance to airflow falls, so air moves in and out of the lungs more easily and wheezing and chest tightness ease. Doxofylline also relaxes blood vessels within the lungs.
  • Unlike theophylline, doxofylline has little effect on adenosine receptors. Because blocking those receptors accounts for much of the heart stimulation, gastric irritation and central nervous system restlessness associated with older xanthines, doxofylline tends to produce fewer of these effects at therapeutic doses.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Some medicines can affect the way Doxovent tablet works, or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
  • Especially if you are taking medicines like ephedrine, erythromycin, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, phenytoin, influenza vaccine, and propranolol.

Interactions with food items

  • Take Doxovent 400mg Tablet with or shortly after food. Doing so reduces the nausea and burning upper abdominal discomfort that xanthines can cause.
  • Caffeine is chemically related to this medicine and its effects are additive. Large quantities of coffee, tea, cola, chocolate or energy drinks can trigger restlessness, tremor, palpitations, difficulty sleeping and stomach discomfort, so keep intake moderate and consistent.
  • Charcoal-grilled and heavily barbecued foods, along with diets very high in protein and low in carbohydrate, speed up the liver enzymes that clear xanthines and may reduce the benefit you get. Very high-carbohydrate diets can have the opposite effect.
  • Alcohol should be avoided or kept minimal, as it adds to stomach irritation and disturbed sleep.
  • Keeping your eating pattern reasonably consistent from day to day helps maintain a steady level of the medicine in your body.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Doxovent 400mg Tablet is used to prevent and control breathlessness, wheezing and chest tightness in long-term airway diseases. It is prescribed in bronchial asthma and in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, where the airways narrow and make breathing difficult.
Both belong to the xanthine family, but doxofylline lacks the part of the theophylline structure responsible for blocking adenosine receptors. That difference means it generally causes fewer heart-rhythm disturbances, less stomach upset, less restlessness and less sleep disruption, while still opening the airways effectively.
No. Doxovent 400mg Tablet works gradually and is meant for regular, ongoing control of symptoms. During a sudden attack of breathlessness you must use the fast-acting reliever inhaler your doctor has prescribed and seek urgent medical help if breathing does not improve.
Caffeine belongs to the same chemical family as this medicine and adds to its effects. Large amounts of coffee, tea, cola, chocolate or energy drinks can bring on restlessness, tremor, difficulty sleeping, palpitations and stomach discomfort, so it is sensible to keep them moderate.
Yes, and significantly. Tobacco smoke speeds up the liver enzymes that break down xanthines, so smokers clear the medicine faster and may get less benefit. If you stop or start smoking, tell your doctor, because your dose may need to be reviewed.
Yes. It is commonly prescribed alongside inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled steroids, which act through different mechanisms. Continue every inhaler your doctor has prescribed exactly as directed and do not substitute this tablet for them.
Nausea, vomiting and burning in the upper abdomen are recognised effects of xanthine medicines, which can increase stomach acid and relax the valve at the top of the stomach. Taking the tablet with or just after food usually helps. Tell your doctor if the discomfort persists.
No. Use of doxofylline is not recommended during breastfeeding, as xanthines pass into breast milk and can make a baby irritable and unsettled. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding so an alternative can be arranged.
Mention any heart disease, recent heart attack, low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, overactive thyroid, stomach ulcer, seizure disorder, kidney or liver disease, and tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Also list all your other medicines, since several antibiotics and stomach medicines change doxofylline levels.
Do not stop on your own. This medicine controls symptoms rather than curing the underlying disease, and stopping it can allow breathlessness and wheezing to return. Your doctor will decide when and how the dose can be reduced.
