Medical Description

Desirox Tablet is used to treat iron overload due to blood transfusion in patients two years of age or older. Excessive iron in the blood can cause tissue damage and lead to medical problems like heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and liver disease. Desirox Tablet contains deferasirox as the active substance that works by trapping iron and lowering its blood levels. Desirox Tablet may cause kidney problems, liver problems, or stomach/intestinal bleeding. Talk to your doctor if you or your child develop any side effects. Desirox Tablet should be taken before food at the same time each day to get maximum benefits. Take this medicine at the exact dose and duration recommended by our doctor. Do not stop taking this medicine on your own.

Uses

Desirox Tablet is used for the treatment of excessive iron in the blood due to blood transfusion in patients 2 years of age or older.

Contraindications

  • If you are allergic to deferasirox or any other ingredient of Desirox Tablet.
  • If you have kidney problems.
  • If you have low platelet levels in your blood.
  • If you have an advanced form of cancer.
  • If you have a condition called high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).

  • You are taking other medicines that can increase your stomach/intestinal bleeding like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (aspirin) for pain/fever, corticosteroids (prednisone) for rheumatoid arthritis, blood thinners (warfarin), oral bisphosphonates (alendronate) for osteoporosis.
  • You have low platelet levels.

  • You have a blood disorder that may increase your risk for bleeding.
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • You experience symptoms like nausea, vomiting, skin itching/rashes, difficulty breathing, dizziness, fainting after using this medicine
  • You experience decreased hearing, hearing loss, visual disturbances after using this medicine.

Directions for Use

  • Take this medicine exactly as recommended by your doctor.
  • Disperse the tablet in water, orange, or apple juice.
  • Do not chew the tablet or swallow whole.
  • Do not consume more than the prescribed dose.
  • Do not discontinue the medicine on your own without consulting your doctor.

Storage and disposal

  • Store in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Overdose

The symptoms of overdose of Desirox Tablet include nausea and diarrhoea. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of the medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

  • Particular care should be taken if you are taking medicines for treating diabetes (repaglinide), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (theophylline), anxiety (midazolam, buspirone), cancer (busulfan, dasatinib), maintenance of anaesthesia (alfentanil), nausea/vomiting (aprepitant), irritable bowel syndrome (budesonide), low sodium levels (conivaptan), immune system alteration (cyclosporine), control of urination (darifenacin), HIV (darunavir), migraine (dihydroergotamine, eletriptan), abnormal/irregular heart rhythm (dronedarone), high blood pressure (eplerenone, felodipine), pain (fentanyl), allergy (fluticasone), birth control (ethinyl estradiol), abnormal/high cholesterol (lovastatin), schizophrenia (lurasidone), erectile dysfunction (sildenafil), blood clots (ticagrelor), depression (duloxetine), insomnia (melatonin), Alzheimer's disease (tacrine), muscle cramps (tizanidine).
  • Desirox Tablet when used together with medicines for treating tuberculosis (rifampicin), fits/seizures (phenytoin, phenobarbital) may decrease the levels of Desirox Tablet in the body.
  • The use of Desirox Tablet with aluminum-containing antacids (aluminum hydroxide) and bile acid sequestrants (cholestyramine) should be avoided.
