Derobin Ointment is used in the treatment of psoriasis. Psoriasis is a skin disorder in which skin cells get multiplied faster, creating bumpy red patches covered with white scales. These patches can occur anywhere in the body but mostly they appear on the scalp, elbows, knees and lower back. These plaques may become itchy, painful and sometimes may bleed. It contains a combination of three medicines, Dithranol, Salicylic acid and Coal tar. Derobin ointment works by decreasing the skin cell multiplication and removes dead skin and helps in improving bumpy skin patches with scales. This ointment is for external application only.

Uses

Derobin Ointment is used to treat psoriasis. It helps in relieving the red, scaly, itchy, dry patches on the skin and the scalp that are due to the increased production of skin cells.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to this medicine or any other ingredients of Derobin ointment.
If you have psoriasis that is sore, tender, inflamed, and have small blisters filled with pus (pustular psoriasis).
If you have psoriasis on your face.
If you suffer from any inflammation of the hair follicles.
If you have acne.
If you have sensitivity or allergy to sunlight.
If you have inflamed or broken skin like oozing wounds and infected skin.
If you have a condition called lupus erythematosus.
Do not use this ointment on your private parts.

Directions for Use

Derobin ointment is meant for external use only. Use it in exact quantity and frequency as prescribed by your doctor.
Apply it on a healthy skin surface free from cuts and wounds and gently rub the ointment on the affected area only. If you are applying on the scalp, first remove scales and debris with a comb and rub it on the affected area.
Wash the ointment off as prescribed by your doctor.

Do not use the ointment once the expiry date has passed. Discard any unused medicine properly, do not flush in the toilet or throw it into the drain.

Since Derobin ointment is meant to be applied externally on the skin, cases of overdose are unlikely. In some cases, an overdose of this ointment for long periods or on large areas of skin can lead to over-absorption of this ointment into the body causing symptoms like vomiting, dehydration, diarrhoea, ringing sensation in ears, deafness, sweating, warm hand and feet, pounding heart rates, increased breathing and other serious side effects. If you experience any of the symptoms or you accidentally ingest it, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed applying the Derobin ointment, apply it as soon as possible. Do not overapply this medicine just to compensate for the missed dose.

Interactions with other drugs

Effect

Benzoyl peroxide dries and irritates the skin, and Derobin ointment contains dithranol and coal tar, which are irritants in their own right. Used together on the same area they can leave the treated skin raw and sore.

Advice

Avoid applying both to the same area. Introduce any new topical product only on dermatologist advice.

Effect

Salicylic acid from Derobin ointment passes through your skin, and far more of it gets in when you apply it to large areas or to cracked, inflamed psoriasis patches. What is absorbed adds to the effect of the blood thinner Warfarin and can raise your risk of bleeding.

Advice

Apply Derobin ointment only to the affected patches and avoid large raw areas. Report unusual bruising or bleeding.

Effect

Tretinoin thins the outer layer of your skin while Derobin ointment is already a strongly irritating preparation designed to strip psoriasis scale away. Applied to the same area, the two can cause marked burning, redness and peeling.

Advice

Do not apply both to the same area. Tell your dermatologist about every topical treatment you use.

Effect

Isotretinoin taken by mouth thins and dries your skin all over the body and weakens its protective barrier, and Derobin ointment adds a powerful irritant on top of already fragile skin. Severe irritation and cracking of the skin can result.

Advice

Tell your dermatologist if you take isotretinoin. Topical treatment plans are usually adjusted during an oral course.
