Medical Description

Dabaz infusion is used in specialist treatment for malignant melanoma and Hodgkin's disease, conditions in which abnormal cells grow without normal control. It contains dacarbazine, a medicine that damages the genetic material inside rapidly growing abnormal cells. This stops those cells from copying themselves and can slow their growth or spread. Because healthy cells can also be affected, treatment is monitored with blood tests and clinical checks. Dabaz infusion is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic.

Uses

  • Malignant melanoma: This skin cancer begins in pigment-producing cells, and dacarbazine can slow or destroy abnormal cells as part of specialist treatment.
  • Hodgkin's disease: This cancer affects the lymphatic system, and dacarbazine is used in selected chemotherapy treatment plans.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Tell your doctor if you have low blood counts, liver or kidney disease, an infection, a weakened immune system, or previous severe reaction to chemotherapy. Your treatment team will check whether your blood counts and general health allow treatment.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Dacarbazine can upset the stomach during or after an infusion. Tell your care team if nausea prevents you from eating or drinking.
  • Vomiting: Treatment may trigger vomiting soon after it is given. Report repeated vomiting or inability to keep fluids down so supportive care can be arranged.
  • Decreased appetite: Treatment may reduce hunger and make eating difficult. Tell your care team if you cannot maintain food or fluid intake.
  • Low blood counts: Bone marrow suppression can lower red cells, white cells and platelets, causing tiredness, infection risk or bruising. Report fever, bleeding or marked weakness urgently.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It is given into a vein under specialist supervision. Blood tests and other checks are needed during treatment. Report pain, burning or swelling around the infusion site immediately because leakage can damage nearby tissue.

Storage and disposal

Dabaz infusion must be stored, prepared and disposed of by the hospital or clinic according to specialist handling procedures. Do not keep unused medicine at home.

Quick Tips

  • Keep every blood-test and treatment appointment arranged by your cancer team.
  • Report fever, chills, unusual bruising, bleeding or severe weakness promptly.
  • Drink fluids as advised if nausea or vomiting makes eating difficult.
  • Avoid people with infections and check before receiving any vaccine.
  • Tell your care team about mouth sores, persistent vomiting or pain at the infusion site.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much dacarbazine can severely affect blood cells and may cause serious infection, bleeding or extreme weakness. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Dacarbazine changes and damages the genetic material inside rapidly growing cancer cells. The damaged cells cannot copy themselves properly, so their growth and spread can slow or stop. Because healthy cells may also be affected, treatment is monitored closely by the cancer care team.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Dabaz infusion works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell them if you are due to receive an inactivated cholera vaccine, a recombinant adjuvanted shingles vaccine or a purified Vi typhoid vaccine, or if you use pegfilgrastim or sargramostim. Your cancer team will decide whether treatment timing or supportive care needs changing.

Interactions with food items

Alcohol is unsafe with Dabaz infusion. Avoid it unless your cancer doctor specifically confirms it is suitable.
