Medical Description

Combutol 1000 is a tablet form which is manufactured by Lupin Ltd. Its active component is ethambutol. It is an antibiotic belonging to the class of anti-tuberculosis medicine. It is basically used for the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis disease. Tuberculosis is a serious infectious disease caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis. It mainly affects the lungs and some other parts of the body such as the brain, spine, etc. Most of the patients suffering from tuberculosis are asymptomatic (they do not show any symptoms). It is a communicable disease. It is spread via droplets of cough and sneeze. Some of the symptoms of tuberculosis are continuous weight loss, cough, sputum with or without blood, night sweats, fever, etc. There are three stages of tuberculosis, i.e., exposure, latency, and active stage. Combutol is given in combination with at least one tuberculosis medicine. This medicine should not be taken without the consultation of a doctor. This medicine should be taken at the same time of the day with or without food. This medicine should not be skipped, even after the resolution of the symptoms. Sudden stoppage of this medicine can result in treatment failure or the development of resistance towards the medicine, which can lead to serious health issues.

Combutol tablets is a category C medicine which means it has potential side effects on the foetus and can be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Seek advice from an expert in cases of emergency. There are limited animal and human studies done on Combutol, which has shown defective effects on the foetus (teratogenic or embryocidal), so it can’t be said that it is safe for the foetus. Directions for Use

  • Combutol tablets should be taken in the same dose and duration prescribed by the doctor. It should be swallowed as a whole with water. It should not be chewed or crushed. Do not break the tablet.
  • Combutol tablets can be taken with or without food. It should be taken at a fixed time daily. Avoid missing the dose or forgetting the dose.
  • Do not stop or change the dose of the medicine without consulting the doctor. Do not take 2 tablets at once; it could be dangerous for your health.
  • It is advisable to take combutol with an antacid that contains aluminium at least four hours before or after taking medicine.
  • This medicine should not be skipped, even after the resolution of the symptoms. Sudden stoppage of this medicine can result in treatment failure or the development of resistance towards the medicine, which can lead to serious health issues.

Storage and disposal

Store Combutol tablets at room temperature, away from direct heat and light, in a cool place. Do not freeze it and keep them away from pets and children.

Overdose

Don’t take Combutol tablets more than the prescribed dose. Overdosing will not improve the symptoms; rather, it will lead to toxicity in the body. It can lead to severe side effects. In case of overdose, directly visit the nearest emergency room of the hospital. Signs of overdose may include:- loss of vision or blurring of vision Skin rashes Burning or tingling sensation of hands and feet Jaundice Liver toxicity (hepatotoxicity) Do not give the same medicine to someone else who has the same condition as it may lead to unwanted side effects.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed the dose of Combutol tablets, take it as soon as you remember it. If it is close to the time of the next dose, then let it be. Take the next dose at the normal time. Do not take two doses simultaneously or more than prescribed to compensate for the missed dose. Do not stop or change the dose of the medicine without consulting the doctor. In case you are regularly missing the dose, then set an alarm or ask your medical guardian to remind you to take it. Consult the doctor to discuss the missed doses and understand what can be done for the missed doses.

Combutol is a bacteriostatic agent (it restricts the growth of tuberculosis bacteria). It interferes with the synthesis of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and the formation of essential proteins. It works by obstructing the formation of cell walls. It suppresses the growth of mycobacterium and prevents the spreading of infection.
