Medical Description

Clomifril tablet is a prescription medicine used for obsessive-compulsive disorder and, in selected patients, low mood or uncontrollable daytime sleepiness. Its active ingredient is clomifril, a tricyclic medicine that changes the levels of chemical messengers involved in mood, anxiety and repetitive thoughts. By altering these messengers, it can reduce obsessive symptoms and may help selected patients with narcolepsy, a condition that causes sudden or uncontrollable daytime sleepiness. The tablet is taken by mouth with water and should be used only under medical supervision.

  • Low mood: Persistent low mood and loss of interest may be treated with this medicine when a clinician considers it appropriate.
  • Narcolepsy: Uncontrollable daytime sleepiness can disrupt daily activities; a specialist may prescribe this medicine for selected patients.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or become pregnant while using clomifril. Human information is limited and animal studies suggest possible harm, so use it only if your doctor decides that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Clomifril may pass into breast milk, and the baby may need monitoring for sleepiness, feeding difficulty or other symptoms.

Driving

Driving

Clomifril may cause sleepiness, blurred vision, dizziness or slower reactions. Do not drive, cycle or operate machinery until you are certain you can do so safely.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol because it can increase sleepiness, dizziness, confusion and impaired coordination.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Take it with food if advised, and do not chew, crush or break the tablet. Use it for the duration prescribed and do not stop regular treatment suddenly without medical advice.

Storage and disposal

Store Clomifril in a cool, dry place below the temperature stated on the pack, away from sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date. Dispose of unused tablets through a pharmacist or local medicine take-back service.

Quick Tips

  • Take clomifril at the time advised by your doctor and swallow it whole.
  • Rise slowly from sitting or lying down to reduce dizziness.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose may cause severe sleepiness, confusion, agitation, seizures, fainting, irregular heartbeats or breathing problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The active ingredient in clomifril changes the levels of chemical messengers in the brain that influence mood, anxiety, sleep and repetitive thoughts. This can reduce obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, while the full benefit may take time to develop.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

These combinations can increase sleepiness, confusion, seizures, serotonin-related reactions or heart rhythm changes.
