Medical Description

Budecort 200 Metered-Dose Inhaler is a preventer inhaler used for the regular, long-term control of asthma. It contains budesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid, delivered as a metered dose from a pressurised canister.

Asthma is driven by persistent inflammation of the airway lining, which makes it swollen, oversensitive and prone to narrowing. Budesonide acts on the cells of that lining, suppressing the genes that generate inflammatory chemicals, so the swelling settles, mucus production falls and the airway becomes less twitchy.

This is a preventer, not a reliever. It does nothing for an attack in progress and must be taken every day, including when you feel completely well, because the improvement is the medicine suppressing inflammation that is still present.

Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after every dose to prevent oral thrush and hoarseness, and use a spacer wherever possible, which delivers considerably more medicine to the lungs and less to the throat.

Because the dose is delivered straight to the airways, very little reaches the rest of the body and the serious effects of steroid tablets are largely avoided. Full benefit takes two to four weeks of regular use.

Its use results in a reduction of symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest discomfort, and it facilitates easier breathing.
