Medical Description

Amize tablet is a prescription medicine mainly used to treat moderate to severe depression. Depression is a type of mood disorder characterised by an episode of sadness, mood swings, loss of interest, hopelessness, etc. Amize tablet is a combination of two components: Amitriptyline and Chlordiazepoxide. Amitriptyline is an antidepressant that works by increasing the levels of chemical messengers in the brain, which helps regulate mood and also treats depression. Chlordiazepoxide increases the inhibitory effects of a neurotransmitter called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) and produces sedating and calming effects. Amize tablets should be taken only after consulting a doctor. Many side effects are associated with this medicine, so the dosage must be carefully monitored. Complete the entire course of treatment and do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without consulting the doctor, as it can cause clinical worsening of your condition or may lead to withdrawal-like symptoms.

Contraindications

  • It is contraindicated in the following cases:
  • If you are allergic to any components of Amize tablet, i.e. Amitriptyline or Chlordiazepoxide
  • If you are taking medicines like Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and antipsychotic medications or using other anti-anxiety or sedative medicines
  • If you have glaucoma (increases the fluid pressure in the eyes)
  • If you recently had a heart condition like a heart attack or myocardial infarction
  • If you have a history of seizure or epilepsy
  • If you have liver or kidney disease
  • If you have respiratory issues like asthma or sleep apnea
  • If you are a pregnant or breastfeeding mother

Directions for Use

  • Take an Amize tablet exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Take an Amize tablet with or without food or as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Take an Amize tablet on a regular schedule, preferably at the same time every day.
  • Take an Amize tablet as a whole orally with a full glass of water. Do not crush the tablet or chew this medicine.
  • Do not take an Amize tablet with other medications without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not suddenly stop taking the Amize tablet, as it may lead to withdrawal side effects.
  • Do not exceed the dosage of Amize tablet on your own.

Storage and disposal

Store Amize tablet at room temperature in a cool and dry area, away from direct sunlight. Keep the medication away from children and pet animals. Do not remove the Amize tablet from its packing and store it within its original packaging. Do not throw the medicines down into the toilet or dustbin. Medications disposed of in this manner may contaminate the environment. Properly dispose of Amize tablet when it is expired or no longer required.

Amize tablet overdose can cause confusion, agitation, sleepiness, raised heart rate, low blood pressure, irregular heart rate, dilated pupils, dry mouth, inability to pass urine, seizures, coma, etc. In the case of an overdose of Amize tablet or if you experience these symptoms, seek emergency medical treatment.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed a dose of Amize tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if you remember missing a dose of this tablet when it is already time to take the next one, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose. Do not take both doses together as it can cause overdose side effects. Consult your doctor if you have further queries about the dosage of the Amize tablet.

  • Food does not influence the effect of the Amize tablet. However, it would be best to avoid caffeine-containing diets like tea, coffee, grapefruit and its juice as it may reduce the effectiveness of the Amize tablet.

  • Many medicines can interact with Amize tablets, making them less effective or increasing side effects. This includes
  • Amize tablet interaction with MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) like Selegiline, Rasagiline, Isocarboxazid and other antidepressants, Lithium, Triptans, Buspirone, Amphetamines, Tramadol, Tryptophan, may cause serotonin syndrome, and these medicines should not be used concomitantly.
  • Amize tablet interaction with antidepressants or mood-elevating medicines like Fluoxetine and Desipramine can increase the side effects.
  • Amize tablet interaction with antifungal medications like Itraconazole, Fluconazole, and Ketoconazole can reduce its effects.
  • Amize tablet interaction with antipsychotics (pimozide, haloperidol) and antihistamines can prolong QT interval (ECG reading) and may alter heart rhythm.
  • NSAIDs, aspirin, and other medications that affect coagulation may interact with Amize tablets and increase the risk of bruising or bleeding.
  • Amize tablet interaction with Herbal products like St John’s wort can lead to life-threatening side effects.

Do not stop the Amize tablet on your own; otherwise, suddenly stopping the medicine may cause withdrawal symptoms, including diarrhoea, vomiting, sweating, confusion, depression, nervousness, and irritability, or may worsen your disease. Amize tablets can cause side effects that can lead to decreased sexual drive, problems getting an erection and ejaculating, difficulty achieving orgasm in women.
