Molecule Description
Tibolone is a synthetic steroid medicine used for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It mimics the activity of the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone and the androgen testosterone in the body.
Uses
This medicine is used to relieve the symptoms of estrogen deficiency (hot flushes, depression, decreased sex drive), in women who have gone through the menopause. It is also used to prevent osteoporosis in women who have gone through the menopause.
Contraindications
When should one not use Tibolone
- Women with any history of blood clotting (arterial thromboembolic) disease including stroke, transient ischemic attack, myocardial infarction and angina, breast cancer
- Allergic to this medicine
- History of liver disease with abnormal liver enzymes
- Any vaginal bleeding
- Any blood clots in the lungs, veins
- History of any inherited blood disorders (porphyrias)
Side effects
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Vaginal bleeding or spotting
- Vaginal discharge
- Vaginal thrush
- Vaginal itching
- Breast tenderness
- Abnormal hair growth
- Weight gain
- Thickening of the inner lining of the uterus (called the endometrium)

Talk to your doctor if
- History of excessive thickening of uterus (endometriosis)
- If you have a history of elevated blood pressure, diabetes, gallstones, migraine headaches, asthma

- If you experience any swelling, pain in legs, sudden pain in the chest, blood clots after taking this medicine; stop the treatment immediately and inform your doctor.

It may interact with can broccoli, red wine, cabbage, brussels sprouts, red wine, alcohol, grapefruit juice and cigarette smoke.
