Molecule Description
Rasagiline is used to treat Parkinson’s disease (nervous system disorder that affects movement).
Uses
To treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (stiffness/ rigidity, tremors, spasms, poor muscle control) as initial monotherapy and as an addition to Levodopa.
Contraindications
When should one not use Rasagiline
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to it or have a severe liver problem.
Side effects
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Involuntary movements (dyskinesia)
- Headache
- Hallucinations (the sight of those objects or people who do not exist in reality), fever, restlessness, tremor and sweating
- Constipation, diarrhea, excessive sleepiness, dry mouth
- Headache, joint pain, mild stomach pain
- Loss of appetite, weight loss
- Urinary urgency
- Irritation of the skin (dermatitis)
- Depression
- Runny nose (rhinitis), irritation of the skin (dermatitis)
- Rash, bloodshot eyes (conjunctivitis)

- You have liver problems
- You notice any changes in your skin while on medication of Rasagiline

Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
In patients of Parkinson’s disease, there is a reduction in the levels of certain chemical neurotransmitters which affect the movement of the body. Rasagiline works by increasing the level of these chemicals in the brain.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Antidepressants
- Antibiotic like Ciprofloxacin
- Cough suppressant like Dextromethorphan
- Nasal and oral decongestants and cold medicine like Ephedrine or Pseudoephedrine
Interactions with food items
- Avoid tyramine containing products like aged cheese, aged, dried, fermented, salted, smoked, pickled and processed meats and fish, concentrated yeast extracts, packaged soups
- Do not take caffeine, chocolates, coffee or cola with this medicine

Dosage
Overdose
If you overdose with Rasagiline, immediately call your doctor or visit the nearest hospital. Signs and symptoms of Rasagiline overdose may include brain-related issues like sleepiness, unsteadiness, fainting, irritability, hyperactivity, agitation, severe headache, hallucinations, lock-jaw, unconsciousness and coma. Heart-related issues may include rapid and irregular pulse, changes in blood pressure and blood vessel collapse, chest pain, trouble in breathing, cold, clammy skin.
Missed a Dose
Take the missed dose as early as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is too late. Do not take extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose.
