It is used to treat recent mental disorders characterized by mood and behavioral changes like feeling things that are unreal or did not happen (acute schizophrenia).

When should one not use Iloperidone

  • If you have an allergy to Iloperidone or any of its ingredients
  • If you have any psychiatric illness due to age-related brain problems such as memory, thinking or language problems (dementia related psychosis)
  • If you have severe liver problems

Side effects of Iloperidone

Common side effects of this drug are:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth, dizziness, fatigue, running or stuffy nose
  • Feeling sleepy (lethargy), fast heartbeats (tachycardia), weight gain
  • Prolonged and slow heart rate (prolonged QTC interval) which can be fatal
  • Dizziness, falling or fainting when getting up from sitting or lying position (orthostatic hypotension)
  • High blood sugar and cholesterol levels which may increase the risk of heart disease and brain stroke
  • Very high fever, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, tremors, stiff muscles and confusion – neuroleptic malignant syndrome (rare but serious)
  • Severe allergic reactions including swelling of face, lips and throat causing swallowing and breathing problems, with or without rashes, itching, skin peeling and blisters (rare but serious)

A:
Iloperidone should be used with caution during the first six months of pregnancy (2 trimesters) only if other alternatives are not available. It should be avoided during the 3rd trimester (or last three months) of pregnancy.

A:
It is unknown if Iloperidone is secreted in breast milk. Still, because it has the potential to cause unwanted effects in the baby, it is recommended to avoid this medicine in breastfeeding mothers.

A:
This medicine may cause problems such as dizziness or drowsiness, reduced alertness, thinking learning and movement problems. You are advised to drive if you experience no such symptoms.

  • History of seizures (fits)
  • Prolonged erection (priapism)
  • Uncontrolled movements of the face, tongue or other parts of the body (tardive dyskinesia) which may become permanent. You are advised to inform the doctor if you experience any such symptoms

  • Certain antidepressants (Fluoxetine, Paroxetine)
  • Few medicines which may increase the risk of irregular heartbeat (3 Procainamide, Quinidine, Sotalol)
  • Certain antibiotics (such as Gatifloxacin, Moxifloxacin, Pentamidine)
  • Antianxiety medicines (Prochlorperazine, Chlorpromazine, Trifluoperazine, Perphenazine, etc.)
  • Methadone (opioid pain killer)
