Molecule Description
Flupentixol is an antipsychotic neuroleptic medicine that is used in combination with drugs for schizophrenia in patients who have poor compliance with the previous medication and suffer from frequent relapses of illness.
Uses
- It is used in the treatment of schizophrenia
- It is also used to treat other psychoses
Contraindications
When should one not use Flupentixol / Flupenthixol
- If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Flupentixol or any other Thioxanthene drugs or antipsychotic drugs or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- If you are feeling less alert than usual or are feeling drowsy or sleepy, or have serious problems with your blood circulation
- If you are excited or agitated
Side effects
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Rigidity
- Tremors
- Restlessness
- Insomnia
- Dryness of mouth
- Weight gain
- Sexual dysfunction
- Galactorrhea
- Menstrual disturbances

Talk to your doctor if
- If you have a heart condition, including an irregular heartbeat (such as a slower heartbeat); have had a recent heart attack or have problems that cause ankle swelling or shortness of breathe
- If you have severe breathing problems (such as asthma or bronchitis), have liver, kidney or thyroid problems
- If you have epilepsy or have been told that you are at risk of having fits (for example because of a brain injury or because of alcohol withdrawal)

How Does It Work?
These medicines act on nerve pathways in specific areas of the brain by blocking the D1 and D2 (dopamine receptors) and helps to correct specific chemical imbalances in the brain that are causing the symptoms of your illness.

- Interactions with other medicines
- Tell your doctor if you are under any of the following medications:
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Barbiturates or other medicines that make you feel drowsy
- Anticoagulant drugs like Warfarin (used to prevent blood clots)
- Anticholinergic drugs (contained in some cold, allergy or travel sickness remedies as well as other medicines)
- Metoclopramide (to treat nausea and other stomach conditions)
- Piperazine (used to treat worm infections)
- Levodopa or other medicines used to treat Parkinson’s disease
- Sibutramine (used to reduce appetite)
- Digoxin (to control heart rhythm)
- Corticosteroids (e.g., Prednisolone)
- Medicines that are used to lower the blood pressure such as Hydralazine, alpha-blockers (e.g., Doxazosin), beta-blockers, Methyldopa, Clonidine or Guanethidine
- Medicines that can cause a disturbance in your water or salt balance (too little potassium or magnesium in your blood)
- Medicines that can increase the concentration of Flupentixol in your blood
- Medicines used to treat epilepsy
- Medicines used to treat diabetes
Interactions with food items
This medicine increases the effects of alcohol on the brain, such as delirium, tremors, euphoria.
Dosage
Overdose
Flupenthixol appears to be relatively safe in overdose. Symptoms like low blood pressure, low blood volume shock, agitation, hallucinations or convulsions have been reported. Coma is also reported in very rare cases. Seek emergency medical attention immediately in case of an overdose.
Missed a Dose
Take the missed dose as early as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to compensate for the missed dose.
