Molecule Description
Cimetropium Bromide is commonly used for long term pain relief in a common functional disorder of the intestines known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS. It belongs to ‘anti-cholinergic’ and ‘anti-spasmodic’ group of medicines.

Contraindications
When should one not use Cimetropium
- Allergic to Cimetropium Bromide or any ingredients of the medicine
- Raised pressure within the eye (angle-closure glaucoma)
- Paralytic ileus (intestinal paralysis)
- A condition in infants that blocks food from entering the stomach (Pyloric Stenosis)
- Prostate enlargement
Side effects
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Dry mouth, decreased sputum
- Dilated pupils, vision problems, increased sensitivity of eyes to light
- Redness and dryness of skin, slow and fast heart rates, heavy heart beats (palpitations) and abnormal rhythms
- Difficulty in urination
- Constipation

Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
Cimetropium Bromide acts by blocking the actions of a commonly secreted substance (acetyl choline) in the intestine that causes contraction of the muscles of the walls of the intestine. This will relax the intestinal walls, reduce the activity of the intestine and thus relieves pain.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Use the following medicines with caution:
- Other similar medicines (Amantadine)
- Anti-allergics (Loratadine, Diphenhydramine, Cetirizine, Hydroxyzine)
- Certain medicines used to treat psychiatric problems (Prochlorperazine, Chlorpromazine, Fluphenazine, etc.) and depression (Amitriptyline, Amoxapine, Doxepin, etc.)
- Domperidone and Metoclopramide (used to stop vomiting) and Cisapride (increases stomach motility)
Interactions with food items
Cimetropium Bromide can be taken with or without food, but preferably with meals.
Dietary Restrictions
A high fibre diet is advised, especially if you have constipation.
Dosage
Overdose
Accidental overdose with Cimetropium Bromide may not be harmful. But any symptoms such as vision problems, dry mouth, and irregular heartbeats should prompt medical attention.
Missed a Dose
Cimetropium Bromide is usually given more than once a day. If you missed a dose, take it as early as you remember. If the next dose is near (due within 4 hours), skip the missed dose and continue with the usual dose as per schedule. Do not take a higher or a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed dose.
